Sexy Lamps, Easy Tips

It’s no secret, I love lighting. I especially love great lamps. In fact one of my favorite lines from anchorman is from Steve Carell exclaiming to Will Ferrell “I love lamp!” SO like an idiot my friends and I are always shouting that out laughing hysterically while on lookers have no idea what is wrong with us.

Lamps are like functional art. they give you light and decorate your room. Bam! It’s a win-win-win….or as Charlie Sheen says, Winning! Here are some of my favorite lamps with great features that are must-haves.

Sexy super model

From Curry and Co, this lamp appropriately called the affaire lamp has grace, bling and comes in at a whopping 34″ height; a must have for good reading light. Like a stunning super model on display in your home this is where function meets beauty.

Deauxville

The deauxville lamp from Jamie Young has it all, height, color and my favorite lamp shade, a barrel. Barrels give off more light and instantly update a space.

Robert Abby

I love color and Robert Abby is the king of colorful lamps. If you are afraid of color or not sure how to use it this is a terrific way to add that much needed pop to your neutral room. Not to mention a little whimsey!

Murry Fiess

For instant glamor and drama always choose black lamp shades. Most of our homes have beige walls. Beige shades blend while black pops. Great for living rooms and dining rooms.

Are You Doing It? Avoid These 3 Design Mistakes

When it comes to design I often say there are no rules,…. but…… and this is a big BUT…. I say this with an err of caution. There are no rules when certain things are taken into consideration like scale, depth and harmony. A trained eye can easily throw items together that seemingly don’t work at all but marry and mingle quite well like a fun party. Luckily, I see the same mistakes over and over and I am here to the rescue!

1) Floor lamps- Dont skimp on floor lamps!

Floor lamps

I see this over and over again. Most of my clients decide they want to purchase a floor lamp and make decisions solely on price, not product. Why? Floor lamps are damn expensive! And often you don’t know that you are not comparing apples to apples. The lamps above are a great example, the one on the left is from Target. A steal at only $69.99 especially when the Restoration Hardware lamp on the right is a whopping $400. But my friends you get what you pay for. The Target lamp is a whisp of a creature made of plastic, wiring is questionable and it barely makes the height requirements for a disneyland ride. At only 59″ tall this little guy will barely make a difference in lighting your room. Instead, opt for the investment piece that is better made, won’t eat through bulbs and at 72″, you’ll actually be able to read your book and avoid stubbing a toe.

2) Pillows-avoid poly fills at all costs

Pillows

Unless you are allergic to down, never ever buy poly filled pillows. Yes they are less expensive but the materials break down giving you lumpy pillows that cannot be fixed. They are hard to sit on and frankly uncomfortable. Down filled pillows are pliable and easy to form on all your upholstery, they are comfy to sit on and just look better.

3) Rugs-size accordingly

How to size a rug properly

This is another mistake I see over and over.  The photo above is a great example of what the homeowner has, and the tape shows what she should have. Rugs create congruency with all the pieces in the room. When the rug is under scaled the furniture doesn’t make sense. See how her chair in the upper right corner is just floating in the room? It’s like a junior high dance where all the girls are on one side of the room and the boys on the other side. We want our furniture pieces mingling and having fun. Now imagine if the rug went all the way to the chair like the tape. The room would instantly feel more comfortable, it would feel larger and all the pieces wouldn’t be angry for being left out. Size accordingly.

Make sense? If you have questions or comments, email me, I’d love to hear from you!

Easy Makeover Ideas In 10 Minutes Or Less

Ever wonder if there was an ‘easy’ button for your next decorating project? Maybe you have family coming for the weekend or you’re planning to have friends over for dinner but you hesitate because your living room just isn’t up to par. Doing a quick change doesn’t need to take a lot of time or money, just simple planning. Heres how to get a quick change in 10 minutes or less.

Lamp art by John Richards

Take a picture of your room. I suggest using your phone, it’s quick and easy. Taking a picture is the best way to really see how it looks and where it needs a facelift. Luckily there are a few tried and true elements sure to update your space in a flash.

1) Lighting-add a new floor lamp or table lamp. This can be something new or a lamp pulled from another room

2) Pillows-Most furniture comes with pillows or you already have some to work with. Move them around, pull from other rooms or add to your existing collection. this is a great way to add something new, a pop of color and more comfort.

Candles

3) Most of us have candles around the house. Candles are a great addition to any room because they uplift and embrace it with ambience. They are great mood enhancers especially in scents of lavender, vanilla or rose.

4) Throws-Adding a throw to your sofa or chair is a great way to add depth, color and most importantly comfort. When a guest sees a throw they subconsciously think comfort and relaxation, they also feel well taken care of.

5) Decorative tray- Trays are great for a room especially when you are entertaining. It keeps your party offerings all together and easy to move around. It can also collect any small spills from pouring tea or scooping sugar.

Furnished living room

Adding color, texture and lighting to a space will greatly enhance the mood. Add just a few elements and your room will be ready in a flash!

A moment in scale

If you read my post from last week, When good design goes bad, you’ll notice that I have a pet peeve for scale. It is a designers strongest arsenal but it is often the one thing that falls flat in most designs. Get it right and the room sings, get it wrong and it turns into American Idol…the bad version.

Today as I perused a few websites I came across a great example of a room that sings and one that…..well didn’t make the cut of yours truly. Here is my quick moment in scale:

1) Poor scale

One kind design

Observe the over scaled chair, mirror and chest. All perfectly good in such a large scaled room…..until you place it with buffet lamps. Yes they are tall and the color shades thankfully pull a bit of weight but not enough to make the scale RIGHT.

2) Excellent scale

Suzanne McGrath

Tall ceilings combined with a large chest and mirror seem second fiddle to the well proportioned lamps. Bold in color, tall and speak volumes (pun intended) compared to the previous example. A much better choice when getting RIGHT! Wouldn’t you agree? Can you see the difference??

What are some of your biggest challenges when handling scale?

How to Decorate an Entry

Every home has a point of entry to welcome its guests. Some are small and require creative ways for big impact and others vast demanding key pieces to cement style and grace. No matter which you possess both require five key ingredients to command order for good reception.

AB HOME Interiors entrance

1)   Color- Every home should have flow and your entry sets the stage for what’s to come. Wow your guests with an enticing backdrop that shows you and your personality off. Are you calm and elegant or bold and eclectic? What ever your style it all starts with color!

2)    Art- I’m a huge advocate for art. It is what I consider to be the “wild card”. It can be abstract, traditional or somewhere in between. Choose pieces that you love and create conversation. If ever you invest in art this is one place that calls for quality.

3)    Console-If you have an entry that is plentiful in space, always include a console or side table. It is a great place to dress up your entry with my next suggestion: lighting. It is also a great place to set keys or mail should you need it along with other favorable decorative items.

5 Must-Have Furniture Pieces for Your Living Room

Living rooms have a tendency to become cluttered with non-essential furniture—TV trays, pianos, Stairmasters—the list goes on. And despite the clutter, they often lack what’s necessary. Whether you live in a cozy apartment in the big city or a suburban six bedroom Colonial, here are five essential furniture pieces that will complete any living room:

AB HOME Interiors

  1. Sofa. Don’t buy any sofa—buy the right sofa for your place! If you have ample room, a plush, leather sectional brings comfort and style to your living room. Tight on space? Try a loveseat with a pull-out bed for guests. As for color, neutral leather sofa or solid microfiber couch are timeless options that can be jazzed up with throw pillows.
  1. Entertainment set. Your TV is often the focal point of the living room. Showcase it with an entertainment set! Consider the aesthetics of your living room when purchasing this unit, but quality is a non-negotiable. Also be sure to get a TV stand or console that can adequately house your DVD player and those clunky cable boxes.
  1. Shelving unit. A shelving unit can be both decorative and functional. Shelves allow you to display knick-knacks or photographs, but also serve as a catchall for blankets, the full 10 seasons of Friends and your pre-Kindle book collection.
  1. Coffee tables. Coffee tables are a must. Stick a couple end tables next to your couch or a large accent table in the middle of the room. Coffee tables come in all shapes and styles. Try nesting tables for added versatility. But whatever table you go with, don’t forget coaster; nasty drink rings can ruin your furniture fast.
  1. Lamps. And He said, “Let there be light!” With that inspiring proclamation, lamps can transform a room through lighting. Plus, a funky lamp adds another layer of visual interest. And forget your grandmother’s old Mod Podge seashell lamp; lighting fixtures come in all varieties to suit your needs and tastes, from floor lamps to side lamps to elaborate chandeliers.

Living room furniture doesn’t necessarily have to be expensive. Just make sure they are well-made and you’re not going to get sick of looking at them in a week. Investing in the right pieces—starting with these five basics—can keep your home well furnished for decades!

Lamps are a great way to layer in additional lighting, however lamps are so much more…they are like adding that extra bit of candy to a room. Apartment therapy series

In the past few weeks I have been preparing for Mrs M’s apartment therapy series on her family room. While she started down a very good path, she made a few rookie mistakes. But nothing a swift designer can’t fix! My plan was to update the scale, take advantage of the ceiling height and add some drama to the space.

My Concept:

martin FR

My Concept

Her lamps were too squatty for a room with such tall ceilings. To beef up the scale I found glass lamps with eggshell drum shades to draw the eye up. These were perfect for her small end tables. The lamp bases fit perfectly while giving her much needed height. To allow the eye to be drawn around the room I wanted graphic prints and strong pops of color.

1) Sofa wall

My assessment

In general black pillows are a bad idea. They create black holes that leave the space empty. My suggestion was woven beige 22″ linen pillows in combination with two graphic pillows from crate and barrel. It pulls all the colors together from around the room and helpd ground the eye lower in the space. With taller lamps, lowering the art, and adding a strong pop of color with the cocktail cubes, Mrs M’s room is stylish and fun.

2) The results

The results

The painting was brought closer to the sofa, lamps exchanged for these beauties, pillows defined, and strong pops of color excite the eyes. Mrs M was well on her way….the space just needed a little punch. Tune in next week and I will show the rest of the results from the family room!

Apartment series: The best ways to decorate a temporary space

Today I kick off a small decorating series: Apartment therapy. My bathroom remodeling series has been wildly popular amongst my readers, however many readers live in temporary spaces. I recently started working with a gal, Mrs M,  who comes to Tennessee for work. She leased a beautiful apartment near my office and has hired me to be of assistance.

Mrs M bedroom

Mrs M bedroom

Mrs M bedroom

We will first start on the bedroom. Her bed is an antique made for mattresses that used to be much smaller. The bed height with a modern day mattress measures at 54″…..it’s a bit too tall. With nothing else in the room it looks unbalanced and disproportionate. We will address that with large nightstands, and add some color to the bed to draw the eye away from the big elephant in the room. Another issue I will address is her lighting. The lamps she has chosen are beautiful but not right for this room. She wants a clean contemporary feel, but these are a bit extreme. I plan on adding something with a bit of color, more bulk and a little less whispy feeling.

She currently has no seating in the room . It is always nice to have a chair in the room to read a book or throw on some shoes. Tune in next week and I will give you a sneak peek at the presentation process and ideas I plan to share with her.
