Viridian, Robert Allen’s New Digital Fabric Book

It has been so interesting to watch my very non technical industry go digital in the past five years. Just in the last three years the Interior Design industry has catapulted into the digital age at lighting speed, and if our manufacturers and trades don’t keep up, well they are in the dark. Now with the simple flip of my iPad you, my clients, can flip through thousands of fabric options with the touch of a finger. Simply type in Pink (my favorite of all colors) and voila; options in the world of pinks!

Robert Allen Fabrics

Perhaps color isn’t your thing and you need a specific pattern like stripes….no problem!

Robert Allen Fabrics

Now our fabric libraries have gone digital! While this isn’t a tactile experience as most of us prefer, it allows us a quick easy tool to search exactly what we need without the added cost and waste of thousands of fabric books. Viridian, as the app is called allows us to shop all fabric books with ease on any computer, tablet or smart phone. And if we find anything we like for the project I can simply call them up and order a swatch. Easy Peesy, love that!!

What do you think of this new app? Like it, love it, or Meh, it’s not preferable?

How to add a little color to your life

Better Homes and Gardens

There is nothing I love more than color in an interior. Color speaks to all of us in different ways, but it never fails to make us feel happy! How can you look at this space and not smile? Some of the easiest ways to add color to your life:

1) Pillows-Super easy to change out and add to any space.

2) Art-Whether you like custom high-end art or inexpensive pieces from the flea market the effect is all the same. Use it to add that pop!

3) Accessories-Sprinkle them around the house in fun unexpected colors. Even if you think they don’t go with the color scheme, use it anyways. It’s always nice to have that added surprise!

What are your favorite ways to add color to your life?

House and Home

Kids rooms can be such a creative outlet for design. I like to call them the wild cards of a home. It is one of the few spaces that can be entirely different from the rest of the home and can be over the top in design. Colors can really come alive, and a child’s hobby can become the theme-giving the space that “wow” factor. Have you ever designed a kids room? What was your favorite part?

Novica

If you are wondering what to buy that special someone for Christmas this year I recently came across an online company Novica.com that has all kinds of great stuff. They are associated with National Geographic and provide a platform for global artisans to sell their unique, hand-made items to those who wouldn’t normally be able to reach them….like you and me. Novica basically bridges the gap between artisan and consumer.

When it comes to home decor I am finding it harder and harder to find items that are unique and one-of-a-kind, so I can appreciate an online store dedicated to items that are special. My industry is getting mass produced and knocked off faster and faster each year and the art of hand crafted products is quickly becoming a dying art. So I decided to order a Carnelian necklace to see how the process worked and I was curious to see if shipping from a place like India would be a difficult process. It took a little over a week to arrive but it was well worth the wait.

After opening the package I assumed the necklace would be in a plastic ziploc bag as most of the natural necklaces sold in the USA are sold this way. Again, to my surprise it was enclosed in a silk box.

The necklace is great and I’ve been wearing it everyday. But they also have really great rugs, home decor items, and furniture pieces. Not to mention really great Eco Friendly belts, earrings and natural flower jewelry. They also have a great selection of Quartz jewelry which is great in the winter time for an energetic pick-me-up! Definitely worth a look. For more info you can find them at their website: Novica.com

Hall of Books-How to decorate a hallway

Was thumbing through the internet over the weekend and came across this lovely book shelf built into a hallway. What a great use of space and a great decorative item to add to a non descript area of the home. Like ceilings, nothing should be left undone including your hallways. Love this! What do you think of this design? Makes me want to start reading real books again!

How to Decorate an Entry

Every home has a point of entry to welcome its guests. Some are small and require creative ways for big impact and others vast demanding key pieces to cement style and grace. No matter which you possess both require five key ingredients to command order for good reception.

AB HOME Interiors entrance

1)   Color- Every home should have flow and your entry sets the stage for what’s to come. Wow your guests with an enticing backdrop that shows you and your personality off. Are you calm and elegant or bold and eclectic? What ever your style it all starts with color!

2)    Art- I’m a huge advocate for art. It is what I consider to be the “wild card”. It can be abstract, traditional or somewhere in between. Choose pieces that you love and create conversation. If ever you invest in art this is one place that calls for quality.

3)    Console-If you have an entry that is plentiful in space, always include a console or side table. It is a great place to dress up your entry with my next suggestion: lighting. It is also a great place to set keys or mail should you need it along with other favorable decorative items.

6 Designing Secrets from an Interior Designer

When it comes to design there are few rules to adhere to. I mean let’s get something straight here, it’s about creative expression and really showing off your true personality. Setting up a list of rules on how you should and shouldn’t design your home is like telling a painter how they should wave their brush strokes. We all do it differently, approach it from all directions but the end result is always magic. So when designing your home, whether you’re a complete novice or fifteen years into the business always live through creativity but keep a few things in mind.

1) Always have flowers

AB HOME Offices

I am a huge fan of flowers and talk of them often here on the blog. Arrangements do not have to be difficult and can make a huge impact on a room with little effort.

2) Every home should shine

AB HOME Interiors

Just like the photo above, all homes and spaces should have some bling. Add sparkle where ever you can. Whether it be chandeliers, candle holders, decorative accessories, any item that reflects light helps lift a room.

3) Add beauty

Art

Simple things in our lives add beauty. It is about honoring your specific lifestyle and the little things that make your house special. It could be an expensive art piece over the fireplace or your five year olds drawing from school. Beauty comes in many things, learn how to define what your is.

4) Buy quality, buy once

Quality

My mother instilled this in me growing up. She would wait a year to buy a chair or furniture piece if it meant she wouldn’t have to ever buy it again. To this day she still has all of our original furniture from our small house in California from when I was a kid. To her quality far out weighed quantity.

5) Always buy natural

All natural

I have a particular client who is a bachelor and thought it was high way robbery to spend $40 on sheets. However, his $40 sheets were 100% polyester and sand paper would have been more comfortable for sleeping. When I suggested he upgrade to $400 sheets his 30 year old heart stopped. But when I explained to him that the benefits of all natural far out weighed the price, not to mention he’d sleep better, he was sold. Now he tells everyone he knows that better quality sheets are the way to go.

6) Get rid of the clutter

Clean and easy

So many homes I go in are stuffed with unnecessary things. Over cluttered with paper, magazines and items that rarely see the light of day. A space needs to breathe and be enjoyed. Choose items carefully and chuck the rest. You’ll be amazed at how well you feel!

Soothing decor to help you sleep

When designing a bedroom space it is always wise to choose colors, items and textures that promote rest. It may seem like a great idea to follow that new trend of flaming red on one wall, but ultimately it won’t be a wise choice so always start with things you love. I just met with a new client this past week that was a prime example of outside influence taking charge. Her mother-in-law loves red and kept advising she too put red in her living room. Problem was she hated red. But it wasn’t until she removed all the red accents from the room and replaced it with her love of blue that she realized this. Your bedroom should be decorated the same. Surround yourself with the things you love to promote a place of rest.

Brooke Giannetti

1) Choose soft colors-

They are always soothing and help lift our spirits. We lead hectic lives so simplicity is key. Don’t choose harsh colors that will agitate or raise your energy. This is a space to relax and allow you to unwind.

2) Don’t over clutter-

Clutter in a bedroom does not promote rest and sleep. In fact people who bring their work into the bedroom are less likely to sleep the entire night through. Paperwork and computer emails play on the mind even once the computer is closed. So avoid bringing anything other than fun magazines, a good book or a journal into your room.

3) Lighting-

Always use lamps in your bedroom as the main source of light. Overhead lighting can be harsh unless on a dimmer. Keep lighting low and comfortable to help warm up your space and help you unwind.

4) Easy fabrics-

A bedroom should not be decorated with complicated fabrics. Keep it simple. In fact, most of your fabrics should be all natural materials of Cotton, linen, or wool. Don’t underestimate the power of an all natural fabric. They are easy to care for, and feel great on your skin.

5) Furniture

I am a huge fan of upholstered headboards in a bedroom. They are comfortable to lean on when reading in bed and can easily be changed up for the seasons. I am also a huge fan of comfy seating in a bedroom. Even if you can only fit one chair in your space, it is a great place to throw on some shoes, read a book or catch up on blogging.

... headboard + wallpaper

Love Joy design

Another tip, always have two nightstands. I go into so many homes that only have one nightstand. Sorry folks, this is a big party foul. Even if it is small like the one shown above, each side of the bed should have a place to set a book or a cup of coffee, there is always enough room!

Trove Wallpaper

I recently visited one of my favorite blogs, Quintessence and was introduced to Trove wallpaper. Wallpaper is red hot and I am using it everywhere, so I was excited to find this new resource. So many awesome papers to choose from and nothing run of the mill or cookie cutter.

Like this one shown above called Chroma. It looks like DNA to me, but love the blur and movement of color. This paper would be excellent in large room or powder room.

Love this one called NYX. How great would this be in an entry way, mudroom or hallway? Love this and the fact that it’s muted in color, allows you to use it in many different applications.

Another favorite is the Navi pattern. I am working on putting together a pink office. This pattern would be stunning in an office, bedroom, or bathroom. Of course I love the pink!

Designer Resources-Where I like to shop

I’m often asked by clients where I like to shop. It really depends on the project and client, which may not always be what you want to hear. So many factors play into my decisions on designing a room, but ultimately it comes down to selecting products that fit into my design concept for that particular project. One of my favorite new resources for clients is Pure Home.

It is a site that offers my clients, and every day folks like you, the necessary tools to execute your project with ease. With just a few clicks they will ask you questions that help you figure out your style and colors with out the hassle of weeding through thousands of products that you probably shouldn’t be looking at or buying.

home_page_category_banner

Their process prevents you from being overwhelmed or buying unnecessary items by asking you questions  ahead of time. This helps you understand your preferences and then directs you to the exact items that meet your needs. Awesome! You’ll know paint, furniture and accessories all with the click of a button. I love it when shops make our lives easier.

Another one of my new favorite crushes is Furbish. I love my interiors to have a mix of new and old so it feels collected. This shop gives me the ability to do just that. With a great mix of new and vintage pieces it’s easy to add that spunk to any interior with a pair of vintage candlesticks or a fun new rug from this site.

Furbish

This shop does require a little more expertise on creating that thing I like to call design magic. Without a plan you might end up buying the wrong thing, however, with that aside, it is the perfect place to cozy up your home with unique items that other places won’t have!

What are some of your favorite places to shop? DO you have a particular style that a particular online store caters to?

Bean bags – Out of the Den and Into The Living Room

Bean bags are not just for kids and college students anymore. Companies such as Bean Bag Boss have pioneered wide assortments of colors, prints and fabrics (from cotton to faux leather to stain-resistant), making it hard to find a reason not to explore these alternatives. The modern bean bag chair has more support and stability than they did in the past, as well as durability. They are easy to shop for, with the advent of online shopping and easy shipping, and simple to move around the house to find the perfect spot.

armchair bean bag chair position

Bean bags are great for flopping down on in front of the tv, a quiet reading nook, or for putting a few of them together to create the ultimate at home experience (popcorn is extra). If you suddenly need a seat for an unexpected abundance of company, you can bring out a bean bag chair from another room with minimal fuss.

Modern furniture trends are moving towards the breakdown of casual and formal furniture into a lifestyle that fits you and your own style. No one wants to have a room full of furniture that isn’t practical in day-to-day life, or enjoyable to use. Bean bag chairs bring people together, young and old, for a fun time among friends and family. For more info click here: Bean bag chairs.

Colour-When Black Works

Black is one of the most dramatic colors you can add to your space. It instantly adds sophistication, drama and depth to any space. Not to mention, adds a perfect backdrop for any added color that is combined with it. Here are some fantastic examples of why black works:

No matter how you approach it, black is sexy. It instantly makes your space stylish and clean. It is also one of those back drops that has never gone out of style. In some form or fashion I have had black in every office, or interior of my own home for over 15 years. And if you review any old decorating magazines or books, black is always consistently shown. Use it, flirt with it, you’ll be amazed at how it will transform your space!

How to decorate your mantel in 10 minutes or less

As with any fall, this is our busy season. I work non-stop, seven days a week frantically trying to get everything done until December. Happens. every. year. And every year I wonder how on earth I will get through it all. Ironically enough, January is our slow season and every year I wonder how on earth I will get through it. I swear I can be such a designer sometimes! The good news is somehow, some way, it all comes together and we get through to the New Year, which we kick off with big plans, stars in our eyes, and tons of yummy left overs. But until then, here are some great tips on holiday mantels that are easy to assemble and easy to tear down when all the adoration of the holidays and eggnog has worn off.

Using items you have:

1) Take ornaments that you already have and string them through some decorative ribbon and hang on your mantel. Take existing hurricanes and fill them with decorative ornaments, acorns, nuts, or candy canes and use them to hold the ornament garland. For added glow, throw in some beautiful votives that will cast a magical glow when lit in the evenings.

2) Purchase a few styrofoam balls in different shapes and sizes from a craft store. Paint some toothpicks in magical holiday colors and create easy to make snowballs. These can be placed on a mantel with garland and candles or can also be placed on a candlestick.

3) Ever wonder what to do with all that left over wrapping paper from holidays past? Wrap existing artwork in your home for some added punch and festivity. Easy to do, and placed on a mantel creates a superb display when mixed with ornaments and your handmade ornament garland.

4) Probably one of my favorite mantel ideas is framed photos. Go through all your boxes of photos and pull out all your favorite holiday memories. Grab frames from around the house and fill them up with funny stories, and loved ones. Take foliage from around the yard and place the photos on your mantel for a sweet and charming walk down memory lane that will keep everyone talking, and laughing!

Super easy and can be done in a snap. And in my experience these mantel ideas are always more impressive and well-received at parties with friends and family than those with expensive over the top adornments. Remember to keep it short, sweet, and simple!

What are some of your favorite and easy holiday mantel decorations?

Installation, 1 year later by interior designer Amanda Gates

Often times when I design a space, I try to design with the future in mind, and as many variables as possible. Design is an investment, and most people do not have the capability to do it over and over again. When I revisit a space that I have done, I am always pleased to see how it looks, and how it has been lived in, and used.

Doc Harr’s office, 1 and a half later
Today I went to go see Dr. Harr. He had a little mishap with a painter, who may or may not have damaged a chair by completely falling on it and destroying it; but that is besides the point. The point is, it was an excuse to go see my favorite dentist, and his beautiful, and spectacular office designed by a wonderful and talented designer, MUWAH!
I was so very pleased to see the office, a little over a year later, looking fabulous. Everything was still in place, in tact, and perfect, just as I had planned it.
Nothing like revisiting a design in it’s full glory seeing it functioning beautifully and looking fabulous. The space is comfortable, easy on the eyes, and a great introduction to a root canal! Ok, maybe not, but the space still looks fantastic, and I am pleased to say, the designer did an outstanding job!

July Market Atlanta, 2010 with Amanda Gates

Every Winter and Summer I make my way down to Atlanta, to visit Market. Those of you who are faithful followers ( Pssst….I adore you!), have seen me post about this so-called “market”. Well as an industry designer for over 12 years, it never occurred to me that the layman has absolutely no clue what this is! Until I emailed Dayka Robinson over at Meditations on Life and style and asked her if she would like to accompany me.

“I keep hearing about this! Is that the gift/home market at the americas mart?  how is it??  I’m trying to figure out a way to get in this year!  let me know what (if anything) i need to know about this.”

Dayka and I have exchanged several emails over the past few months, primarily because I’m stalking her about Atlanta, and all the great things the city has to offer.  I always go to Atlanta for business, and am enamored with Atlanta’s southern charm and glamour. But I am always the outsider looking in, getting in the way on the road, driving too slow and getting all sorts of lost,  frustrating the local city dwellers. Boy can those locals get rowdy!

So this year I thought I would reach out to Dayka, bright eyed and bushy tailed, to convince her that I would now be her best gal July 15th-18th. We did a little horse trading, teeth pulling, and hard negotiating but we came up with a very fair swap. She shows me Atlanta, and I show her Market. Well, I feel like I have a V.I.P. access card to the coolest club in town, with the coolest kid on the block. I cannot wait!

I think she will adore Market. One after another, like an indoor market place, vendors are lined up trying to persuade the buyers that their product is the best, and that they have something no one else does. Of course everyone knocks everyone else off, so that is not entirely true! But more than ever, I am excited to go this year. Her fresh faced enthusiasm to see this for the first time will be thrilling. And I of course will feel like a kid in a candy store (we all know how much I LOVE candy) given access to my favorite city.

Install day Franklin Tennessee Interior Designer, Amanda Gates

So we are loading up the van, and heading out to a clients house this afternoon for the install. It was a pretty tall order, for not a lot of money. The client needed new paint (expensive), new fireplace surround (expensive) and he wanted furniture for his family room, living room, and dining room. And he wanted ALL of this done for 15k. Well I am one hell of a designer, but I can’t make miracles happen. Especially when we started with all NEW furniture. Here are the befores

Senior Show, Franklin TN

This Friday the O’more college of design will be showcasing it’s annual Senior Design show. This show is so much fun to go to and see all the budding designers and raw talent. This show, sponsored by The Factory at Franklin, displays color boards, prints, models and many more creative applications to show off their stuff.

O’more College

The college was founded in 1970 by Eloise Pitts O’More. She patterned the school after Le College Feminin in Paris, France, where Pitts studied in the late 1920s, and was aimed at women, who were traditionally not involved in the design fields. O’More began the college with nine students in her home. Since Pitts death in 2002, the college has passed into the hands of Dr. Mark Hilliard. He continues to “fan the flame” of creativity. It was originally founded as O’More School of Interior Architecture and Design and is located in the historic district of Franklin. It is a non-traditional, accredited college awarding the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Interior DesignFashion Design & Merchandising, and Visual Communications which includes Graphic DesignAdvertising & Animation. It has an enrollment of about 200 students each year, and the grounds and school are amazing.

Elements of design by Nashville designer Amanda Gates

I have mentioned several times how important scale and proportion are to a room. With all interiors, the Elements of Design are successful when there is a unifying theme that runs through out the room. This blends everything together and creates Harmony. Of all the principles of design, scale and proportion create harmony and this is most important. Without this, the room lacks cohesiveness and sabotages any chance for flow.

Sarah Richardson
Harmony is easy to achieve if the scale is correct. The furniture should be in close relation to the rooms size, fabrics should be appropriate for the furniture frame and rooms use, and accessories should be in context to the rooms appropriate size  and various elements, such as furniture in the room. One of the most critical elements for achieving harmony is the color palette. Color is a constant influence in our everyday lives. And it is imperative that there be at least one or two common threads of color throughout a room. Just like any good outfit there needs to be common ground and there needs to be an element of organization. It is crucial that there be flow, and connection, so that it creates a beautiful movement around an interior space. Color should reflect your personality and of all things, it accomplishes harmony and flow. When these two things are right, the room feels good, and looks good with ease.
Formaonline.com
Another design element to achieve is comfort, so the room is easy to live in. Comfort is calming, and softens a room so that harmony and balance can be achieved. Comfort brings a restful feeling and provides a welcome accent to your guests.

There is little doubt that color is emotional. Every color conveys a mood, thus creating atmosphere. Have you ever walked into a room and felt calm, or uplifted? Colors translate into feelings, and those feelings mixed with beautiful lighting, fabrics, and furnishings evokes atmosphere.

Formaonline.com
Texture is not often grouped with words like glamour, but it is essential to any well designed room. For example, if you choose to deck your entire room out in neutrals, it will fall flat on it’s butt without texture playing a major role. Think about this when designing your next room. Think about a room with textured linen, draperies with stripes, marble veining in a table, and hardwood floors with nubby sisal rugs. This my friends is a room rich in design and texture
David Duncan Livingston
The key to success in reaching your desired design goals, is in the mix.(see photo below) The Elements of Design can be subtle or they can be bold. You can take a slightly varied approach with assorted textures, or introduce many different elements. Always combine things to keep them interesting. Remember the key Elements of Design are:
1) Scale
2) Harmony
3) Color
4) Comfort
5) Atmosphere
6) Texture
Kenneth Brown
This room above achieves all of the elements of design. The scale and proportion are perfect. The colors, brown and white create cohesiveness throughout the room allowing the eye to easily read the room. The slipcovered sofas and side chairs look inviting and comfortable and the linen drapes and lamp shades, the scratched leather ottoman, and the window box fabric on the side chairs gives us the depth and texture we need to create a beautiful flow and atmosphere. Just stunning!

Dining Spaces-A gourmet affair or leisurely fare? by designer Amanda Gates

Does your dining space reflect your personality and lifestyle? Are your meals a gourmet affair, or a simple family meal before everyone scatters? No matter who’s at the table, or whats on the menu you deserve a space that is inviting, comfortable and attractive!

Troy Beasley
When designing a dining room you must put together a plan. Determine what your dining personality is. Don’t design a room for proper dining with fine china, crystal and silver if your idea of a gourmet meal is chinese take out, and flip flops. If you are a jeans and t-shirt kinda person then it is safe to say so is your dining lifestyle. Define the space accordingly. Determine if this space should be formal or casual.
Once you have developed a plan the design principles can begin. Most dining rooms today are leaning towards the casual side. But that does not mean we forgo all formality. It means that todays formality has a modern twist. We have tweaked it to accommodate our busy lifestyles. What does this mean for you when designing your dining space? It means you have flexibility in building your designing space and it can reflect exactly who you are and how your live~Voila, Lifestyle!
Maybe you like to sit and dine with friends for hours, but you want to do it in your jeans. Great, lets use a sofa as seating, (like the photo below.) There are few rules, so think outside of the box.
While there are few rules in designing any room, there are a few tips on designing a dining space that creates atmosphere for great dining pleasure. Use symmetry. Symmetry is easy on the eyes and makes digestion better. When you are comfortable and relaxed the meal is more enjoyable. Add mirrors. They reflect all light in the room (including candle light) which adds sparkle and creates a wonderful and enjoyable mood. Nowadays dining rooms are easy, and pleasant so forgo the fussiness. People are more casual today and fussiness is awkward and uncomfortable. Make it easy on your guests and allow them to feel comfortable and at home. Use durable, but textured fabrics that are easy to clean. You want the meal to be tactile as much as it is comfortable and delightful. Dining is an experience. Let your guests see, smell, taste and touch the experience so that the occasion is engaging, comfortable and satisfying.
Flickr
It does not matter how you dine. It does not matter that the occasion is informal or formal. What matters is the personality of the space in context to the host. A dining space can be a room or nook in your home. The most important factor is the food, family and friends, conversation, and most importantly the experience you endow on your guests. Make it memorable and enjoyable so that it feels right.

#1 question of an interior designer~What exactly do you do?

The craft begins

When I went to school to be an interior designer, it never crossed my mind that for the next 12 or so years of my life, I would spend a good portion of that time explaining what it is I DO. I think as designers we take for granted or assume that people know what our job entails. I was recently inspired by an article that Tom Beasley wrote on his blog pertaining to this very subject. In addition to this articles points, I think it is also very important for consumers/potential clients to know how valuable our creativity is. If it wasn’t valuable then no one would ever hire us for help. Our intellectual property is worth it’s weight in gold. And the more years a designer has, the more valuable that gold is. (keep this in mind when you are evaluating a green pea fresh out of school at $25 an hour versus a seasoned designer of 10 years who charges $100) Fees are all relevant to level of experience, and competency. For example, a few years ago a green pea that I was mentoring came to me and said she wanted me to take over one of her projects. Unsure of the reasoning I contacted the client. They were exasperated. After 10 hours of work with her they felt they has accomplished nothing. I went in, determined the issues, developed a plan, set up my trades and solved the problem, all in 2 hours. So at first glance I may seem more expensive, but my competency saves you time and money.

flickr

Not only do we evaluate blueprints, specify fixtures, meet with builders, architects, and cabinet makers, build space plans, select furniture, design window treatments, select fabrics, choose paint, evaluate reflective ceiling plans, act as purchasing agents,… and many other services- at the end of the day, we creatively and cohesively put together an original vision, unique only to your home.

When my mama comes to town she always comes to the office with me. (she has no choice) She is completely taken away at hard we work, and how many INFINITE details we take care of in my office, to make your house into a home. “I could NEVER do what you do!” she says to me. “Well, I could never do what YOU do!” I say to her. (she is an E.R. Nurse.yucky!)

I know that interior design mystifies a lot of people. I know that creativity eludes many people. But what we do is pure magic. (can you hear the angels singing?) When you approach us with your project, it is as if we are looking at a blank canvas full of potential. Often times we can see that project six to eight months down the road completed in all it’s glory and beauty.
Flickr
Interior design is an art form. It takes great talent, consideration, and organization to do what we do, and it is a business. Our time is valuable, and our ideas are our enterprise. We do what we do because we love it, and the creativity keeps us alive. But remember that the intellectual property that we hold is not just for good merit. What is it that we do, you ask? We are entrepreneurial tycoons, promoting and dealing our trades, multi tasking, design mavens that hustle on your behalf to twist, tweak and skillfully accomplish with absolute expertise ~ design magic! So that when you start your day, and end your day, there is a smile on your face because your home makes you genuinely happy!

How to make Family Rooms versatile by Amanda Gates

Family rooms are the most versatile rooms in our house. Whatever your lifeSTYLE, they can be used for watching a movie, entertaining guests, doing homework, listening to music or quietly reading a book~assuming you have purchased the right sized lamps!

The most important thing when putting together a family room is a PLAN.  Whether the space is big or small, the right plan will give you more STYLE, personality, and function without any surprises.

In order to capture your STYLE your room needs to breathe the way you and your family live. For example, if the room will only be used for entertaining and music then there is no reason to spend thousands of dollars on an entertainment unit that holds a TV. Design should be tailored according to your plan and the function of the room you are designing.
Once you have determined HOW the room will be used, select fabrics that function appropriately for it’s use. Obviously if kids will be involved the fabrics need to be prepared for combat. Different fabrics express different levels of formality and they need to sync well with the rooms purpose.

Always dress your windows with draperies. Draperies play a major role in building your STYLE, and they too can determine the formality of the room. Windows without draperies look naked, and the room will look unfinished. However, make sure they are the correct SCALE. In other words, don’t throw some inexpensive draperies up for the sake of having your windows dressed because there is nothing worse than flat draperies. As a rule of thumb remember, GO BIG or GO HOME.

Tell a story with your furniture. Don’t select an entire suite from the furniture store. Choose pieces that speak to you and your personality. Stick to your plan, and choose items that read closely to your rooms function without sacrificing the
end goals. Mix and math your pieces and ground the room with a great rug.
Lori Dennis
Lastly, design with flexibility in mind. Always have lightweight options like stools, that can be easily be moved around. Or leave open space so that chairs or other seating from other rooms can be added. Small tables are lightweight and can easily be moved for different settings. Choose a rug that is larger than the furniture arrangement so your stools, tables and any other added item work with ease and don’t look forced.

Troy Beasly
Mix it up, have fun, and always have a loose plan so you don’t fall into unexpected surprises.

Lighting Tips From Nashville Interior designer Amanda Gates

For those of you who follow this blog, or for those who know of this blog (thanks to the tens of you that actually read it) you know that I don’t claim to be the brightest bulb in the lighting department. Im EASILY distracted by shiny, sparkly things (like light bulbs) that put a twinkle in my eye and a wink of joy in my step. Sprinkle in a basket full of crayons, spongebob stickers, a little candy, and a 1.75 bottle of flavored vodka and Im destined to lead a charmed life. Yes this may seem a bit unvarnished to most people, but frankly I find the basics in life to be THE most rewarding. Take the lightbulb for example. Edison invented the first lightbulb in 1879. A man after my own heart, he started his first entrepreneurial ventures selling CANDY!!(it has sugar in it!) We take for granted this simple but revolutionary invention, that is still used today.

Lighting has come a long way since it’s original start in1879. Today many lighting engineers and designers manipulate lighting to create a spirit, or state of mind. Lighting can add drama, excitement and create all sorts of fun sensations (without alcohol, or overdose binges of sugar)

Lighting can dramatically affect a space’s atmosphere and comfort level, so it is very important to consider it when remodeling or building a home. There are three types of lighting:

Task lighting-this is used to read guilty pleasures, dial 411 for take out, so we can pretend we actually  cook food, and many other visual tasks that we will profess we can do like sewing, and doing office work (is that really necessary?) Task lighting is generally lighting that is focused directly onto a work surface.

Accent lighting-Similar to task lighting, due in part to its directional purposes, but it’s used primarily for decorative stuff. Like artwork, architectural features, and sets “moods”(dammit I left my mood ring at home!)

Ambient lighting-This is the most common of terms in our industry. Everyone throws this word around like it’s a politician at a bunny ranch caught on tape. This light is appropriate for hall ways, entertaining, watching TV and any other areas needing privacy control for unmarked cars. (a-hem.. bunny ranches) It is a soft level of light that diffuses the spread of illumination with a soft wash or kiss of light to the point of velvety darkness:

As a big “D” (DESIGNER for you laymen’s) I often have the opportunity to work on homes that start in the blueprint stages. This allows me to draw in a beautiful lighting plan (note the need for crayons, preferably the 96 pack with built-in sharpener) that takes advantage of all the lighting discussed above and take in to consideration all the homeowners good loot, I mean VERY expensive art. Some of the more common fixtures are:

1) Wall washers: ( no these won’t be doing ANY of your dirty work!)

Wall washers are an incredible work horse. They create fantastic, dazzling patterns on the wall, (remember shiny, sparkly things excite me) and they are the best at accenting and highlighting surfaces and artwork. Generally they are placed on the ceiling 12″-24″ from the wall. BUT a word of caution, if you have high ceilings you may have to place these suckers as far as 8 feet out to get the correct angled direction for the wall, or art you are trying to highlight.
Here is an example of wall washing:

P-R-E-T-T-Y!

2) Standard recessed can.

Another work horse, this standard fixture can be found in every home. What makes them different and perform different are the trim’s. They are available with reflector trims, black alzak, black or white baffle and various others. Black and white baffle are by far THE most common recessed fixture in America, in a good Ol standard 6″ size. I do not recommend these BIG OL’ honking things. Here is one example (they are few and far between) where GO BIG OR GO HOME, does not apply!! The smaller the fixture (3″-5″) the better.

Standard recessed can with reflector trim:(shiny and sparkly)

This is a great example of Standard recessed can lighting, in combination with accent and wall washers. This also shows why smaller cans are better. Lighting puts a lot of holes in the ceiling. Smaller less obtrusive is better.

3) Pinhole aperture

Pinholes trims are great for direct down light. These can be used to highlight art or create a dramatic lighting effect in a niche, or corner. This pic is a great example of genral down lighitng and pinhole niche lighting.
In this entry, Rosemary placed a beautiful sculpture at the base of the stairs. The mood and drama of this space is created with the help of a spot downlight on the sculpture art, making the piece come to life with lighting high’s and lows. (and after two shots of vodka, and a bag of M&M’s, you can move the sculpture and pretend you are trying out for American Idol!)
4) Slot aperture

These fixtures are ideal for controlled lighting. They not only create a spot, they give you flexibility. The trim has a 35 degree rotator inside the trim that allows precise placement of light.( we designers like OPTIONS!) They are typically used for art and places that movement and correction are needed, but are typically found in dining rooms on either side of the chandelier and hallways.
Lighting can make or break a space. I don’t care if your furniture is made of cardboard or candy (do you mind if I gnaw on your furniture, I LOVE candy!) Lighting can make EVERYTHING beautiful. Of course the booze can accomplish this too, but it requires unlimited consumption. At some point you have to show up to the office and pretend to work!
The BEST Home lighting book for layman’s by far is Sunset’s Home lighting book
Home Lighting (Home Basics)
It is very easy to read and understand, and it is an inexpensive introduction to the basics of lighting! Shiny, sparkly things!

Scale and Proportion-Does it really matter?

In the design community you will typically here us throw around very snazzy words such as SCALE and PROPORTION. Being a designer is a very big responsibility and we find that putting a strong vernacular to our talents makes us appear methodical, cautious and NORMAL. You see, we are DESIGNERS, (mythical creative creatures of imaginary folklore!) that tangle themselves in IMPORTANT tasks, and enlist themselves in crazy ideas as if it were a timeshare of decorating enterprise! We have enthusiastic imaginations that intimidates ordinary folks, but as long as you keep us focused and keep us away from the candy and vodka, our aptitude in resourcefulness can be quite genius!

So what the heck do these decorative words of garnish mean? Scale, as you will often here us say, is not a word to be taken lightly. Oh No! It is one of THE most important and FANCY tools a designer has in their back pocket. (next to the skittles, and melted abba zaba bar. YUM!)

So what is it? (it is a delightful and yummy taffy with peanut butter filling and…..OH! you were referring to the topic of scale, of course, ..FOCUS)

Scale and proportion are in comparative relation to a WHOLE. It is the relationship of one thing to another.

Scale is an interiors biggest arsenal. The KEY ingrediant to what makes a space work, or fall flat on it’s butt! Here are some examples:

Pic 1

Here you can see a great example of poor scale. This is a beautiful room with great color, however the rug and lamps are lacking severely in scale. They are too small for the room. To make matters worse these items are paired against a large sofa. I don’t know about you, but I could see myself TRIPPING a thousand times on that rug and holding the lamp in the air while I tried to drink out of my sippy cup, I mean read an important novel. This room has potential and could easily be fixed, but as shown, gets a grade F, from AB HOME.

Pic 2.
Another great room at first glance, however the sofa is a bit short for the high ceilings, and the beautiful egg chair is dwarfing it; especially by putting it in Black, a strong bold choice, compared to the rest of the room. This room looks unbalanced to me, (hey whats in this sippy cup anyways?)

Pic 3.
This room is lacking a lot. It definitely needs a designers touch! This is a great example of single width draperies gone wrong! They have installed the rods on the trim ( no, no, no) and the panels are too skinny (GO BIG or GO HOME) for the size of the room and furniture. The sofas are large and over stuffed so to pair them with wimpy draperies is incorrect scale and proportion. This room has potential, but also fails by AB HOME standards (it’s the GOLD standard of opinions that matter!).

Pic 4.
This room gets a C-. Overall I think the design concept is strong. The mirror helps expand the space and the sofa and side table mix well together. Where this room falls off the train (hehe, I crack myself up) is the train car coffee table. It is WAY too low to the ground. This sucker will bite you in the shin right where it H-U-R-T-S! To have something this low, with pointy glass corners, ALL WRONG, and screams ouchy!
Phew! That was rough. So now you have been lectured 4 ways to Sunday on what NOT TO do. Here are a few examples of spaces that got it right, and show what
TO do:
Vicente Wolfe
Simple four poster bed brings the eye up and high lights the high ceiling. The draperies are proportionate to the room size and interiors (remember pic #3?). The wing back chair has a generous height, and the texture of fabrics, wood and stone mix well to create an ascetically pleasing room. Your eye gracefully bounces around the room with effortlessness (notice the louis XV headboard mixed with streamlined four poster bed. Genius!)
The Ludlow
Keeping the wall color a soft white allows the beige sofa to coordinate nicely with the white leather chairs, and beige rug. The clear glass table tricks the eye in thinking there is more space and makes it feel more open. The pictures elongate the room and over all the interior is soft and easy to read. (also notice that the chairs and sofa are similar in height.)

This is a good alternative to Pic number 4 above. This table is very similar but the scale and proportion are correct for the room. This would be easy to set a drink on, and if you happen to bump into it the knee won’t cry nearly as much as the shin. Although if you hit a bright yellow table you may want to get glasses, and put down the sippy cup! Pic courtesy of country living.
Everything about this room is balanced and perfect. The draperies are the correct widths, the chairs and sofa are an excellent size for the ceiling height and the fireplace and armoire balance the left and right side of the room. Just Beautiful.

Those last four pictures are superb examples of excellent scale and proportion. The rooms are easy on the eyes, easy to read, and they don’t feel “off”. The Vicente Wolfe photo and the Country living photo are great examples of  drapery widths in proportion to the other items in the room (especially compared to Pic 3.) Magnificent! Want to explode your brain on the mathematical elements of proportion and symmetry? Read this book (shown above). There is a reason why things feel “off” if Scale is out of proportion
(a mathematical mad scientist reason!!!)

In the Pink is a beautiful collection of Dorthy Draper projects. One of the most iconic figures of the 20th century, Dorthy Draper was a HUGE advocate of scale and ALWAYS used it in her commercial interiors. She hated and almost refused to work on residential projects because she not only wanted FULL control of her projects but she wanted things larger than life! Bravo! The BEST part, she didn’t start her momentous career until she was 40! With no education and three children she set out to change the world, and we are still talking about her 30 years after her death! A true mythical, creative creature, of imaginary folklore!

Nashville interior designer~Top 10 design tips

AB HOME Designs
Bonus tip. Here I mixed an inexpensive sofa with original art by Marabeth Quinn. I also mixed in some expensive silk zebra pillows with a crewel pillow from Pottery Barn. The stools I had custom made and the lamp is from lamps plus. My Tip, Mix your elements. Combine investment pieces with economical pieces to achieve balance and overall uniformity.

AB HOME Designs
Bonus Tip. Keep it SIMPLE! Don’t over clutter a space. Use items that are special and unique to you. Mix it up. Everything goes together if done simply. Here I have mixed wicker chairs with burlap pillows and a Louis VI style hand painted chest. I have combined it with a very modern lamp and original artwork.

Some days being a designer can feel like being a rock star. People swoon at me like I hold the key to all their decorating solutions. And I do, because I’m a DESIGNER. With alluring aptitude I wave my magic designer wand and create a formula for world peace. Or at least domestic peace within the family! Designers have the ability to mix, infuse, interpret and answer every decorating need you have and often times throw in a little clever surprise, that captivates and excites you. That is why you hire us. We help you push that visual envelope, get you outside of that comfortable box ( that you have grown accustomed to) and whack you up side the head with imagination, enchantment and maybe a little witchcraft if necessary.

…..mirror, mirror on the wall isn’t this chair the most spectacular of all!!!

I may not be able to tell you what 16 x 2 is, (off the cusp), or tell you which senator is currently cheating on his wife,(without google) but I can tell you that the chair you just purchased is all wrong, and the paint color looks lavender because you didn’t take into consideration the reflection from the pool. I have been at this for over 12 years, and I have learned that while I may not be able to answer the above questions without help, but I can expertly whip your space into shape with my eyes shut. No it isn’t witchcraft (but if it convinces you to get that awesome sofa, the one I’ve told you to purchase three times because I swear to holy heaven it’s the answer to all peace in humanity, I cannot be responsible if I must take unavoidable action). I may not be able to solve all the worlds conundrums but I do hold the key to some of the worlds most burning question:

“What are some tips you can give us!”
It really is an enigma to me. I find it weird that I can select a color with ease, draw a lighting plan without restraint and space plan your furniture like a ninja while walking AND chewing gum! I guess being a DESIGNER really is like being a rock star, only prettier and cleaner. So here it is, my top ten design tips:

Tip 1. Take the ordinary and make it extraordinary. Use every day items in a new way. Make it fun, unexpected and special.

Tip 2. Add the element of fire. Many fireplace companies are making portable fireplaces. Here the homeowner uses one as a space divider and focal point. They are clean burning, enjoyable and create a conversation piece.

Tip 3. Reversible draperies. Custom draperies are WORTH the money. But to get more bang for your buck, add a decorative fabric where lining would typically be. This allows you to turn the draperies around for different seasons or moods.

Tip 4. Details. One reason designers are worth their weight in gold, they think about the details. I purchased this sofa at highpoint back in October. I didn’t want just another “beige” sofa. I wanted something special, different, but not for obvious reasons. Every time my client has a guest to her home they are shocked and thrilled by this little inexpensive DETAIL.

Tip 5. Size matters. If you take ANY tip from this post, this is the one to REMEMBER. Im a Nazi about scale and proportion. Always go for the gold. Go big or go home. My philosophy is do less with more. Get rid of the clutter and knick knack tchotchke’s. Do a few choice pieces, in a larger scale and call it a day. Back away from the crap!

Tip 6. Walls and ceiling’s. So often homeowners forget about walls and ceilings as decorative potential. Throw some paint on it and it’s finished. Add DETAIL and interest with nailheads. This not only allows a visual stopping point to relieve the eyes, but adds visual interest with the particulars, in an area not thought of as important.

Tip 7. Storage. Get creative. Book shelves and furniture are not always the answer. Use some fabric and your walls become a great place to store magazines, drawings, and anything else the kids can throw in there with a wall pocket.
Tip 8. Rethink. This goes back to making the ordinary into something extraordinary. Rethink your storage solutions. Does it need to be the way it has been for 100 years? How great would this be in a dining room as wine storage? How about in an office as paper storage? Or blueprint storage.

Tip 9. Mantles. I love making mantles larger than life. Extended mantles past their “expected” areas is one of my trade marks. It creates visual balance, intrigue, and a great area for display.

Tip 10. Mirrors. This is in designers 101. It is one of the easiest solutions to ALL problems. This little work horse can create such magic in the simplest and least expensive ways!

There you have it. My top ten or so design tips. Everyone of these tips has been used by me in my interiors, at one time or another. Be sure to check back next week for one of my most favorite specialties, lighting. Over the years I have become a connoisseur in lighting. It completely makes a home, and creates a mood that furniture and architecture cannot do on it’s own.

To cathedral or not to Cathedral, that is the question! By interior designer, Amanda Gates

As a designer I have a tendency to have bloated thoughts in reality. I live in a fantasy world of rather large ideas and notions of how the world should be and look. Contemplating each move with utmost concentration as if playing a game of chess I aspire to change all the ugly in the world and make it into something captivating and pleasing to the eye. Now my thoughts in judgment can be mischievous. Without you knowing I may come from behind to the right, make you turn left, and hit you over the head with my mojo bat, like the magic designer I am. Without you ever realizing, I sprinkle you with designer fairy dust (full of doe eyed excitement) and with enchanted dexterity you react as if it were your idea all along! Truly spellbinding. This is an excerpt from a post I did last July, Being the fairest of them all.

Im currently working on a wonderful new construction project in Kentucky.
We are still in the planning stages of the home and after seeing the first set
of preliminary drawings from the architect I knew we would have to revisit a few things to accommodate the furniture. (Architects always forget this little detail.) After discussing some
ideas and ways to improve the space the architect went back
to the drawing board and came up with a fabulous new fireplace and seating area.

Along with his new plan he included a rough rendering of the new room with
beams. The homeowner was completely against a cathedral ceiling because
she wanted one like this:

After showing her husband the rendering from the architect he loved the idea
of a cathedral ceiling. Uneasy about this new direction she called me.
I went into action! I twisted out a triple lutz and turned into the bewitching,
and enchanting designer I am. With my doe eyed excitement I LOVED the
idea of the wood beamed cathedral ceiling and here was my chance to
hypnotize and captivate! After 15 minutes on the phone I pulled out all
the stops. I charmed, I delighted I DROVE it home. No question about
how I feel about adding this element back into the space! Delighted that
the option was back on the table I swung hard with my designer mojo bat
of MAGIC! With a twinkle in my eye, charisma in my voice and crazy in the
head I cajoled every which way to Sunday. Remember I live in a fantasy
world of rather large ideas and notions of how the world should be and look
and my job is to convince everyone else to purchase tickets.

Im not sure if my Designer Magic Talisman worked. I do tend to have
bloated thoughts in reality and not everyone rides the same train of
imagination. But I am a force to be reckoned with, I can also be
quite annoying, I mean charismatic. On Monday I shall find out if I
allured her into the idea! What are your thoughts? Cathedral or
beam and ceiling?

Before and after’s

Most weeks I prance around here with the big “D” on my chest like God’s gift to designer society. (And most weeks I am God’s gift. I mean really does it get any better than me? Ha!) Placed here on special assignment to devour and conquer ugly spaces, I glide from space to space waving my magic wand of excellence. With gale force winds, I twist, tweak, and storm through the unpleasant and make things, appealing and agreeable. This however, is not one of THOSE weeks.
This week has been unfriendly, displeasing, repugnant, and downright disagreeable. Gasp! I’m going to head over to Kristen’s (at cup of chaos) and just steal the whole bottle of Vodka. Maybe two. Taking one drink at a time, out of this CUP of chaos, is just not working! Im beyond cups and chaos at this point. I need a BOTTLE of pandemonium with a side of havoc, mayhem and I will take anarchy for dessert.
To bring back that luster of hope that I am gifted, accomplished, and talented, I thought I would put up some before and afters. Maybe this will help me feel like a competent, capable designer who can actually CREATE, design and implement, despite the fact that my clients think Im a punching bag, door mat, and bank of trust. Enjoy!

Commercial interiors-Dental office by Amanda Gates

I am THE quintessential design savant when it comes to interiors. I know, I know, but what can I say it’s a gift! Last fall Dr Harr came to me with a set of blueprints, a plot of land and a dream. So like the good little designer that I am, I got to work.

Dr Harr is a dentist (OUCH!) and my visits to the dentist have not always been pleasant ones. As soon as my anxious, uneasy, apprehensive feet hit the floor of a dentist’s office Im gasping for air, sick with worry and swallowing a tizzy of uptight strung out jitters. I can’t think straight, and Im blurting out a range of high pitched carnival cruise line horn noises. Another words I get a bit squirrelly.
I wanted Dr Harr’s patients to feel at home when they walked into the door. I wanted the interiors to ooze contentment and ease. I wanted it to feel like an extension of their home.
The interiors consist of warm wood floors, stained trim, and oh so comfortable upholstery. Chocolate velvet on the sofa, creme chenilles on the side chairs, herringbone wool for the other side chairs, and brown leather for a quiet masculine nook. I even put a fluffy wool and flokati rug on the floor. The cocktail table is reclaimed, acid washed oak. With a weathered look and feel, kids can come in and shove magazines, toys, or any other items without hesitation. And for a little pop I installed two oversized black and white tables for either side of the sofa.
Now this may not be an ordinary reception area for a dentists office. But when Dr Harr came to me with his plans I knew right away the interior approach this needed. It needed to envelop every patient with a warm hug, encouragement, and a “no need to worry, your in good hands” touch!

Being the fairest of them all

As a designer I have a tendency to have bloated thoughts in reality. I live in a fantasy world of rather large ideas and notions of how the world should be. Contemplating each move with utmost concentration as if playing a game of chess (AS IF I could play chess) I aspire to change all the ugly in the world and make it into something captivating and pleasing to the eye. Now my thoughts in judgment can be mischievous. Without you knowing I may come from behind to the right, make you turn left, and hit you over the head with my mojo bat like the magic designer fairy I am. Without you ever realizing, I sprinkle you with designer fairy dust (full of doe eyed excitement) and with enchanted dexterity you react as if it were your idea all along! Truly spellbinding.

Yes I can be dazzling, even colorful at times with my seductive designer voodoo. But what you must understand is that it is all done for your best interest. If I am to change each and every ugly space in the universe, persuasion is in order. I only have so much time people, and you dilly dallying around to make a decision, well there just isn’t enough time for all that! I have a plan. A BIG plan. An IMPORTANT plan. A plan full of fundamental scheming. (with grave wicked laughter) A plan so calculated not even TARGET can hold me back.
Yes my thoughts are bloated in reality. My estimations, and approximations may be off slightly. Im a designer for GOD’s sake. Im not required to calculate my motives with scientific certainty. BUT, I am required to create an undiluted definite purpose; of which, I have. It is a plan. a BIG plan. An IMPORTANT plan, with unconditional totality I have a plan to be the fairest of them all who’s definite purpose: DESTROY at all costs the appalling, unpleasant, monstrous, repulsive villain, aka=UGLY!
With deliberate and premeditated strategy I will change all the ugly. Remove it with abrupt swiftness. A matter of maximum importance. (this may require my Valentino’s and a strand of pearls!) With my blueprint of intentions I will sketch, layout, measure, formulate, concoct, develop, arrange, design and outline my evil plot. I will expel, exterminate and remove the ugly, one space at a time. And yes, this will be a daunting task. But I have been given the title, the mission to which I cannot turn down. It is my duty as a designer to eliminate and destroy this wicked villain. If designer voodoo is needed I will recruit, enlist, and assign the burden of knock down drag out force if necessary. It is inevitable because I live in a fantasy world of rather large ideas and notions of how the world should be.

Who is the fairest Designer of them all!???

MEEEE of course! These days I like to fly my DESIGNER flag high. (Don’t be mistaken, Im just HIGH on life! No need to know how I achieved this magical predicament of circumstances ) For 11 years I have stayed content and complacent with living under a rock. My head in the sand. What can I say, a lot of really good things happen there. To include, but not limited to reasonable, and rational thinking. Thinking,…… thinking…. and well, more thinking. You’d be amazed at all the great things you can conjure up with SO MUCH thinking; (unequivocal dumbfounded stupidity). All the while staying low key, quiet and satisfied. Too busy getting sand out of crevices, of which the particulars of such intelligence won’t enlighten any of us. BUT the tranquility of my dumbness is soon to be over turned by the Queen herself. My fortress will no longer be hushed by silence.

So why the sudden change in egotistic, self centered, boastful behavior? Call it modest pride, but more than likely it’s my participation in what I like to call old age, a-hem, I mean experience. Ok, so Im gloating. But I cannot feel but a little proud and glorious ( why won’t this damn flag go any higher!!) with my new found perspective/enlightenment/shear stupidity.

I made the mistake of watching HGTV last night. Now, don’t get me wrong, this is a fundamental and impressive network with BIG important people; especially if you need to learn mad skills like Mcgiver. Like an Engineering mastermind, I have learned how to properly use fishing line, wire and a pair of pliers like nobody’s business! Very important in these FRUGAL times. But you would be mistaken to think that the context of such a show is actually real. Disregard the blatant fact that the budgets never include all the labor but manipulate you into thinking that you can tear down, rebuild, reupholster, renovate, restore, reassemble, glue, screw and undo, all for $1000. The amplified puppet master, I mean host, with an accentuated smile, and embellished hand gestures over gliding the lily pond ten fold, you can HAVE ALL THIS and more!!!!!!! (clapping, music, and Bob Barkers beauties filled with JOY and EXCITEMENT!!! YAY!!!)

Ok so I understand that these ground breaking, pivotal shows are addictive. They throw stars in your eyes telling you that you too can achieve undeniable, alluring, spell binding elegance and beauty, all with a pair of pliers, fishing line, and wire. Don’t get me wrong, you can, as long as you have the village people (jingle~young man are you listening to me, No man does it all by himself, it’s fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A~jingle) I mean a village to help put it all together for FREE. But who cares. The charisma of the puppet master slams you with mystique, thrill, a little glitter, and with a monumental SHAZAAM, the fairy godmother waves her wand and you have your self a beautiful room!

So why all the hatred? Never mind the fact that I have been trying to get my ground-breaking, pivotal, unprecedented and innovative show since 2006. That’s irrelevant when Im trying to make my very pertinent and valuable point. Besides, I’ve moved on, I have TARGET now. ( I HEART TARGET!) No hatred. I’ve got nothing but love for HGTV. Really I do. I think they have some well celebrated and noteworthy shows. With about 80% garbage sprinkled in, but the other 20% is good enough material to carry the show, and make me tune in.

I have stupidly succumbed to the idea that each show was respectfully infected with high quality, superior design. These designers being the chosen ones. A blueprint of exceptional and accomplished design. Like a drooling servant I would gaze at the TV safeguarding my new found knowledge of calculated insight, waiting until I too could be an exceptional accomplished designer; a chosen one. Well no more. I have removed my head from the sand (still shaking my pant legs out; how on God’s green earth did sand get in there….) I reject and object my thoughts of being an incompetent, substandard designer. The 80% garbage they call a show is nothing more than a vehicle for filler. (of which I will gladly help you bring that down to 75% with my ground breaking, pivotal, unprecedented show; F-O-C-U-S AMANDA!!)

I am good at what I do. It has taken me a LONG time to get to this level of confidence (old age and shear stupidity) But after seeing this show, no need for particulars, I realized that I can do better; all without hesitation or reluctance, I can confidently say this out loud. I am no longer indecisive. Never did I think I would exercise the thought of burdening myself with the responsibility of TRUSTING and INVESTING in self-confidence. After all a women finds self assurance through her husband right? HAHAHAHA! (No thanks I will do it on my own!!) But my husband is my biggest most discerning fan. However, I have decided that I AM the fairest of them all. I have to be. Why else would TARGET choose me? I refuse to stay quiet, but rather candid about how I see it. My flag will continue to fly high ( if I could just figure out how to get this damn contraption to work; where are my pliers?!!) I am shrewd, clever and wickedly talented…..(deep breaths, in out, in out; Holy shit! For the love of GOD, Good GOD did I just say that out loud??!!) But I can’t help but feel a little proud and glorious for my new found perspective/enlightenment/shear stupidity. After all I am a DESIGNER, a mystical, creative, creature; the thing legends are made of ….or at least that is what I will tell myself until I pass out from hyperventilation or get stabbed by a pair of pliers trying to get my flag to fly, all because I am in a halfwitted self absorbed state of obtuse ignorance.(Designer is DOWN! I repeat Designer is DOWN)

Darryl Carter interior design

A few weeks ago I did a small little post on Darryl Carter, (http://abhomeinteriors.blogspot.com/2009/05/darryl-carter.html) and his beautiful designs. His aesthetic is clean, fresh, and stylish but simple and easy to read. He has introduced a new line through Thomasville that oozes restraint and grace, hence the mention on my blog. Mr Carter himself apparently saw my post. I really didn’t say much; thank GOD I didn’t go off on one of my rants. I really could go on and on about Mr Carter. Well to my surprise, as my staff and I slaved over the rearrangement of the showroom (for our new sale), in walks the post man with the above letter; FROM MR CARTER HIMSELF!! So Darryl if you are reading this post too, I want to thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to write to me. It is something so simple yet meant the world to me and made coming in on a Saturday SO worth it. As you can see I have framed it. I have it in my office above my credenza, and as I strive to become a better designer I will look to this as my inspiration. When I have an unruly client, I will look to this for inspiration, when I want to quit interior design for any number of reasons, I will look to this for inspiration. And when I want to become an attorney I will remind myself there is nothing I would rather do than interior design, and look to this note as inspiration! THANKS!!

We are wrapping up the May Savings Event in the studio today. You can still find products online at their discounts until midnight tomorrow. And while I so enjoyed having a three day weekend last week, I am paying for it today. I forced my poor tired staff into the studio today to move our shop around to get ready for our new promo. Being a designer I have severe A.D.D and nothing can stay the same more than a week, maybe two; and oh how my staff begs for three or four. But I wouldn’t have it any other way. I like things fresh, new and exciting. And we are starting our Pick Your Savings Event on Monday the 1st! Im so excited for this event. Unfortunately it is only open for locals, but when you come in you will be given an envelope that contains those magical words, DISCOUNT! Four lucky folks will receive an 80% off envelope. I had several people slip in today wanting to get a head start on the promo, but patience is a virtue….so you must WAIT! I hope all of you have a fantastic weekend. I must leave the studio before I move another thing. If I don’t leave I will tinker until I collapse!
