How to Decorate an Entry

Every home has a point of entry to welcome its guests. Some are small and require creative ways for big impact and others vast demanding key pieces to cement style and grace. No matter which you possess both require five key ingredients to command order for good reception.

1)   Color- Every home should have flow and your entry sets the stage for what’s to come. Wow your guests with an enticing backdrop that shows you and your personality off. Are you calm and elegant or bold and eclectic? What ever your style it all starts with color!

2)    Art- I’m a huge advocate for art. It is what I consider to be the “wild card”. It can be abstract, traditional or somewhere in between. Choose pieces that you love and create conversation. If ever you invest in art this is one place that calls for quality.

3)    Console-If you have an entry that is plentiful in space, always include a console or side table. It is a great place to dress up your entry with my next suggestion: lighting. It is also a great place to set keys or mail should you need it along with other favorable decorative items.

Fabulous foyers-How to welcome your guests

One of my favorite spaces to decorate is foyers. They welcome your guests into your home, and it gives them a snapshot of whats to come. If done right, your guests will be intrigued and eager to explore! Today’s post is a guest post brought to you by Susi, a writer for Arcadian Lighting, (one of my favorite must-shop resources for beautiful light fixtures.) So welcome Susi to the blog, and be sure to leave her comments below. If you have any questions for her, be sure to email me or leave a comment, and I will be sure to have her answer them for you!

This post focuses on fabulous foyers. Creating a welcoming entry, whether it be a foyer or entry hall, sets an inviting tone for your guests and a pleasant greeting to you whenever you come home. A few key pieces like a console table or dresser, a chair, a rug, a mirror, and of course, gorgeous lighting can make your foyer feel fabulous.

A crisp, clean foyer with chic furnishings and wallpaper greets friends and family in this traditional home. The blue table lamp adds a spot of color, while the white chandelier adds texture.

A pair of lamps on a console table is a classic arrangement for a foyer. Recessed lighting creates additional ambient lighting for the foyer.

A foyer can be a great place to add bold color and patterns in your decor as this is a space you don’t spend a lot of time in. Wall sconces are a good choice for both ambient and task lighting in addition to a pendant lights or chandeliers.

An elaborate wall mural sets this foyer apart from a typical entry hall. Clear glass shades on the wall sconce do not distract from the mural but provide light in the evening. The mirror helps accentuate the light from the table lamp.

A double height entry requires large scale furnishings and lighting to fill the space and create an impact. Love the oversized, elegant chandelier.

Built ins and custom storage can turn a small space into a great space. The recessed lighting adds drama to the nooks as well as providing ambient lighting for the foyer.

This entry designed by Lloyd Ralphs Designs has beautiful architectural details. A crystal chandelier adds sparkle to this black and white space.

The chandelier creates sparkling light reflected by the over scale mirror in this modern foyer. The wall sconce lights a dark corner in this small foyer.

Front doors-How to welcome your guests

I remember when I was in design school, my friends and I visited a very high end residential neighbor hood, that was known for it’s state of the art architecture. If you had asked me that following week what I thought of the buildings, you’d be lucky if I blurted out ‘good.’ But had you asked me about the entrances, I could have gone on and on about the doors! Nothing says welcome like a stylish front door.

Contemporary

It doesn’t matter if your style is traditional, contemporary or extreme.

Wood and iron door

Putting thought into your front door shows your guests that you thought of them. Think about it. Rarely does a home owner use their own front door. They usually use a side door, or garage to enter their homes. So the front door is designed, planned and thought out for those special visits amongst friends, family and neighbors; and the occasional UPS visit too. But giving your guests the feeling of warm invitation, and “come again” hospitality leaves an imprint on how they feel when they enter and exit your home. Not to mention the “did you see that door!”

And finally, an entrance that would make even the most disheveled housewife look good! Beautiful and interesting sidelights, paired with a sleek black door, this entrance will leave your guests feeling chic and elegant. Perfect for a Summer get together, or holiday sit-down!

What is your most favorite thing about  an entrance?
