Blackberry Z10 accessories you need now

It’s no surprise that the new blackberry Z10 is being very well received not only in the US, but also abroad. Being one of the first smart phones available there were concerns that this new generation Z10 wouldn’t live up to expectations. Surprisingly as an ambassador for Verizon, I often struggle with my new phones trying to locate all it’s features and really maximize on all they have to offer. My learning curves are typically big when it comes to technology! But the new Z10 is super easy to navigate, easy to use and I have benefitted from it’s ease of use because it  has allowed me to explore it’s fabulous accessories.

1) Z10 battery charger

Z10 blackberry charger

Just pop in your battery and the charger does the rest. Also comes with an extra battery. If you are a guy or gal on the run this is a must have!

2) Screen protector

Screen protector

For $16 bucks this is well worth the investment.Women are notorious for throwing their phones into the abyss of their handbags, which results in scratches and gauges in the screen.

3) Z10 Case

Z10 phone case

If you loose your phone  in your purse or choose not to carry a purse at all, a case with clip is the way to go. I rarely put cases on my phone, however this case is convenient, sturdy and adds some girth to the phone making it easier to carry. I also have a tendency to drop my phones about ten times a day.

4) Blackberry’s bluetooth speaker

Blackberrys blue tooth speaker

If you like to listen to music this is a must have accessory. I love listening to music while blogging, working and doing emails and such. This device is a solid piece that sounds great and is easy to use. And if you get a call it’s an excellent device to use on speaker phone.

    Sexy Lamps, Easy Tips

It’s no secret, I love lighting. I especially love great lamps. In fact one of my favorite lines from anchorman is from Steve Carell exclaiming to Will Ferrell “I love lamp!” SO like an idiot my friends and I are always shouting that out laughing hysterically while on lookers have no idea what is wrong with us.

Lamps are like functional art. they give you light and decorate your room. Bam! It’s a win-win-win….or as Charlie Sheen says, Winning! Here are some of my favorite lamps with great features that are must-haves.

    Sexy super model

From Curry and Co, this lamp appropriately called the affaire lamp has grace, bling and comes in at a whopping 34″ height; a must have for good reading light. Like a stunning super model on display in your home this is where function meets beauty.

    Deauxville

The deauxville lamp from Jamie Young has it all, height, color and my favorite lamp shade, a barrel. Barrels give off more light and instantly update a space.

    Robert Abby

I love color and Robert Abby is the king of colorful lamps. If you are afraid of color or not sure how to use it this is a terrific way to add that much needed pop to your neutral room. Not to mention a little whimsey!

    Murry Fiess

For instant glamor and drama always choose black lamp shades. Most of our homes have beige walls. Beige shades blend while black pops. Great for living rooms and dining rooms.

What are some of your favorite lamp options?

You always get what you pay for

For those of you that read my blog you know how much I preach about good design rather than budget design. Well last week I got a taste of my own medicine. Thats right, I tried to save a few dollars on my hair and boy did I pay for it. Literally.

Every May I always get my hair lightened for summer. It is one treat I give to myself and I love how it brightens my face. When a deal came across my desk I thought it to be a win win. I get my hair lightened and have a few pennies left over for a cup of coffee, perhaps two……or so I thought.

When I went to the salon this is what I wanted:

    From pinterest

Cute cut, side swing and blonde, perfect for summer! I’ve been getting my hair done for 20 years and this photo above seemed simple enough, right? Assuming that anyone could do it. Ah, yes….ANYONE could do it…..

My color (middle pic) clearly had zero blonde in it. In fact I left with darker hair than I arrived with.

Me two hours before my hair appointment

Despite me mentioning and showing the stylist this picture (above) of me from that morning she clearly had no intention of fixing it. In fact she told me it would take two to three trips to lighten it up to the level of my “wanted” photo. Ummm, my hair was close to that color when I came in! So with my tail between my legs I went back to Erin, my trusted stylist at Paige Simmons. She got me in right away to give me my summer blonde. The lesson here? I ended up paying three times what I would have normally paid and I was mortified having to explain all this to Erin. Thankfully, she was very kind and understanding. And after it was all said and done I finally got what I wanted……minus my left lung and a kidney to pay for it all.

My best tips to make the most of your next trip

I have been fortunate enough to travel a lot this year and have had the added benefit of staying in numerous cities, hotels and planes; running through airports and renting cars. While this may seem daunting I have had a terrific time and learned much along the way. If you are about to travel here are some of my best tips to keep you well on your way.

    1) Airports

    Airport chic

It goes without saying that when traveling always wear clothes that are comfortable. But that doesn’t mean you can’t look chic. Always wear flats. I cannot tell you how many women I see in the airport with 5″ heels…….really?! Nuff said. I always bring a sweater and a scarf, preferably one in a color to add some instant pop. Trust me, you will go through ten different temperatures just walking from the car to the boarding area, be prepared but be chic about it.

Use a carry on bag and a big handbag. Carry on is easier. Surprisingly you can carry a lot of different clothes and toiletries on a carry on, don’t underestimate it’s size. And remember  to layer when traveling. A tank top under your shirt, your scarf and your sweater can all be combined with your other outfits. Mix and match.

A large handbag can carry snacks, hand wipes, chapstick and your wallet. I always keep a small clutch with me so when I arrive to my destination I have a small bag to carry around but it can also fit into my large handbag.

Another recommendation, bring a hat. I always have a fedora. If my hair has gone flat from being in three different climates and two naps, a fedora adds instant chic. It also keeps the sun out of your eyes.

    2) Airlines

    Southwest airlines

Southwest is hands down the most reliable airline. Most people prefer airlines that offer assigned seating. But when you travel a lot you just want to get where ever you are going. American airlines is bar none the worst. Every flight, and I mean EVERY flight I have had with them has been delayed at least 30 minutes. More often than not they are delayed an hour or more. They are also kings of canceling flights all together. And if you have a connection let’s just say it is a cluster you know what……I hate AA. The other airlines are not much better. They all charge for baggage, have change fees and have terrible customer service. Southwest has their ear to the ground. If you put a complaint up on twitter you are guaranteed to have a solution from them within minutes. And not a lame ass one like “we’re sorry about your unexpected travels”.

    3) Rental cars

    The dos:

    Top rental cars

I have tried a couple of rental places and have found National to be the best. If you become an executive member you simply show up, grab the car you want and avoid the ticket counter. Very convenient. My top four rental cars for comfort are:

Chrysler 300-Peppy, great gas mileage, comfortable, easy to drive and solid

Ford taurus-Excellent car. Super comfortable, solid, good gas mileage, easy to drive and often has butt warmers which I love!

Ford escape-If I go to a city that I need to shop in, this is a great car. It is easy to drive and maneuvers like a car but gives you the function of an SUV

Ford Fusion-I prefer the taurus but if they don’t have any I choose the fusion. While the console is a little awkward to me because it is completely open (meaning your stuff goes everywhere) it is easy to drive, comfortable and gets good gas mileage.

    The BIG Don’t:

    Worst car to rent

While the toyota venza looks cool and looks easy to drive it was by far the worst rental car I’ve had. Incredibly uncomfortable. Seats were beyond hard (jarring!)I could never get the steering wheel in the right place and over all just an awkward car to drive and sit in. Also a big disappointment was the back. The entire back area was plastic so for two days I got to hear my luggage slide around and slam into the sides of the car. Plastic seems like a good idea for dirt etc, but they clearly did not think it through. Not a pleasant experience while traveling. It carried a lot of road noise, was uncomfortable and the experience of driving it was not enjoyable at all! In fact I got the car in San Antonio, drove it to Corpus Christie and then back to San Antonio…..while the trip was fun my experience and memory of that trip was the stupid car. Toyota is you are reading this the car sucks. You need to fix it!

Additional Notes for the experienced traveler:

If you travel more than two times a month invest in the admirals club. All airports have them. It is a lounge provided by an airline like Bristish and it is a wonderfully quiet space to do work on your laptop, take calls, make copies, enjoy a cocktail and just regroup before your flight. No loud speakers, kids screaming and general airport nonsense. They also provide food and terrific customer service in all the clubs. GREAT way to fly.

If you travel more than two times a month most airports offer security packages as upgrades. Meaning you pass the long lines and get straight to the front. Traveling every month and doing the same routine over and over can be daunting. It is the little things that make it more pleasant!

Remember, traveling is fun. I have met some terrific people while traveling. In fact I had dinner the other night with a gal I met on the way to Philadelphia. I also try to meet up with other designers in every city I go to. Make it fun, meet new people and enjoy the experience.

    Confessions From An Accidental Decorator

I recently sat down with one of my favorite DIY carpenters, Brad Stanford, who by accident fell into the home trade and never looked back. He started out in the corporate world buying and selling small business franchises which expanded into other small business ventures to help out friends. In order to sell them, however, many needed minor updates to move them quicker. He quickly picked up many of the skills from fellow hired carpenters to speed up the process, and keep the costs down. What started out as a time saving, budget crunching business flip soon turned into residential projects over the weekend on his own home. What he didn’t realize was the time and effort each project required, including the budget that would quickly dwindle. In an effort to stretch each dollar he learned fast where to cut and where to splurge. Here are some of his best tips to help you on your nect project.

    1) Cabinetry

    The kitchn

What I have learned is cabinetry is real expensive and can eat a huge chunk out of your budget instantly. But it is also one of the most dramatic changes to your space. That is why kitchen before and after’s always look so amazing! Look at your options. Can you repurpose the existing cabinets and how can you make the most of them? Like you Amanda, one of my favorite things to do is to add color. Take old oak cabinets and spray them with some serious chile red automobile paint or a manly Navy blue and it looks awesome.

    2) Lighting

    Lighting

I learned this trick from you. Wow, you can take just about anything, a piece of junk out of the trash, and if you light it well it looks like a piece of art. Lights make all the difference, and are inexpensive. Now an electrician can cost you $85/hr but well worth it to update your space and add cool detail.

    3) Customize off the shelf

    Customize off the shelf

This is where being “handy”, comes in handy. Haha. Take off the shelf items from home depot, IKEA, even the junk yard and add your own personal details. I love adding hardware and unusual items to book shelves, cabinets and walls. Combine it with strong paint and good lighting and it kicks ass.

    4) Glass

    Glass

Another trick I learned from you, glass changes everything. It just ups the stakes and makes stuff classier. I use glass all the time in partitions, showers, cabinetry and railings. I love tearing up old cabinets or doors and repurposing them into pantry doors decorative elements in a room anything really. And to save money, grab old mirrors or glass tops from flea markets, junk yards or thrift stores.

    5) BAM-Trim

    Living room trim

I use what I like to call Big, Ass, Molding. On everything! Molding is a great way to detail anything ordinary and give it some punch. Take regular old pine boards that are 10″ high and make it into baseboard, or trim out a wall to look like a build-in armoire. There are so many great tricks to make things look custom.

At the end of the day there are definitely tricks to saving money. But the trade off is time and elbow grease which is not something everyone has. And my “finds” don’t always work out. I purchased a sheet of glass at a junk yard once and learned that in order to use it as a tabletop it needs to be a certain thickness. It shattered and I ended up having to buy another one and have it cut down, so in that case I saved no money. You won’t have

    Does your furniture talk dirty?

All of us lead active lifestyles. Kids, pets and family can be hard on your upholstery and it shows in the rooms that are most often used. So how can you clean them? It is best to avoid over the counter cleaning products like Resolve, or Wool-lite. Most of them contain oils that will leave a film or residue, that attract more dirt leaving stains larger and more visible. Never attempt to clean your upholstery without knowing what the fabric is first. Carpet is a great example of this. Many carpets contain olefin and cheap recycled products that act as stain guards. Unfortunately, those stain guards are on the surface of the fibers, so when a spill occurs the protectant is removed and your carpet is now exposed to new dirt and stains. It’s best to look for a cleaning code on the fabric tag found on the frame underneath your cushions or tag under the carpet so you are better equipped with the right products. There are 4 different cleaning codes found on furniture, fabrics and rugs:

    Upholstery Cleaning codes

If you can’t find a code, then it’s best to leave it to the professionals to choose the best cleaning method.  The fabric dictates which method will be the most effective and also how well it will clean. Most professionals like Citru Solution charge between $50 to $100 to clean a sofa or rug. If you decide to hire a professional always have them do a test spot first. If you’re not satisfied, or they cannot get the results you want, then it is best not to have it cleaned. Unfortunately, some fabrics and rugs, especially those made of acrylics and synthetic fibers cannot be effectively cleaned.

    Upholstery cleaning

When purchasing new upholstery for your home it is best to consider what fabrics are being used in what type of room. An active room requires more than a guest room. If you have a choice always go with natural fabrics like wool, cotton or linen. They are easier to clean and not as finicky as synthetics. Or consider using commercial fabrics, they are high performance and handle messy lifestyles well.

After your upholstery has been cleaned hang your rug up or stand chair and sofa cushions up, to allow them to thoroughly dry. I highly recommend if you hire a professional to call Rose Upholstery cleaning or Citru Solution. Both use all natural cleaners that are not harsh and safe for kids and pets. Stains are inevitable, but before you allow your furniture to talk dirty, figure out the fabric materials otherwise you’re the one who gets punished!

    7 Ultimate Decorating Must Haves

Gone are the days of well polished rooms that no one uses. Todays interiors are fresh with a twist and built for families, pets and entertaining. And if you want your room to sing, then here are 11 must have design items your room can’t live without!

    1) Emerald

If you haven’t got it, then go on and get it! It is the hottest color of the moment and I guarantee you it will be be popping up in your clothing and home decor faster than turquoise. It is an appealing color that soothes our moods, and goes with everything!

    2) Honey Comb

    Honey comb

The coolest graphic on the street. While geometrics are still the hottest thing, trellis is out honey comb is in. Be prepared to see this graphic popping up in book shelves, accessories, fabric  and wallpaper.

    3) Unique lighting

    Unique lighting fixtures

Boring light fixtures from big box stores are just hum drum. Many designers are viewing lighting as art and making it do double duty. Look for lights that are fun, unique and kick up conversation.

    4) Greige

    Greige

Brown is a has been, grey is the cool kid. Grey plays well with all colors and is more contemporary than it’s brown counterparts.

    5) Fantastic art

    Christina Baker

Art, art and more art. Always have at least one custom piece in your home that is special to you and lifts your spirits. This piece above by Christina Baker makes me so damn happy I could forfeit vodka and ice cream for a month just to own it…..I think.

    6) Vintage

    Vintage furniture

Buy vintage furniture or invest in antiques. Furniture today is not built like yesterday; it’s also not unique. Ever try to lift a 60′s dresser? It takes two guys, a sumo wrestler and peter pan. Not really but it’s fun to imagine a man in green tights lifting furniture. But I digress. My point, make your space different than your neighbors, find pieces that are cool and be good to the environment by recycling.

    7) That piece that makes you go…..

    Spider wallpaper

Always include oddities or conversation pieces in your home like this spider wallpaper for the powder room! Nothing like making your guests squirm while they pee! hahaha

How To Plan Your Perfect Room

When it comes to interiors there are a few things that separate the novice from the expert. I tend to see the same rookie mistakes over and over and over again. If only there were vodka and or money involved when I hit the WHAMMY button! (Here are a few examples of this very thing.) What sets designers apart from the average joe, aside from experience and schooling, is typically the approach of designing a room. We are quite methodical in our practice, despite being known as “right brains.”

Often to avoid mistakes and for fear of the unknown, novices will typically over indulge in one thing, possibly two things to over compensate for their inability to pull it all together. For example, buy EVERYTHING in a neutral color, or buy up Michaels entire inventory of fake ivy to shove in every corner of the house…..Yes Paula, that one was for YOU! ~wink~ The problem with this theory is that it looks dull, and you end up wasting money.

Most of my clients are fantastic at 85% of all their design, and have a terrific vision of what they want……but it’s that last 15% that makes or breaks the space, and and green ivy will not save the day. In order to make your space look like the pros you need to plan for the perfect room starting with 3 simple tips.

    1) Make a plan!

How to plan the perfect room

Seems simple enough, I know, but most people seem to skip this step. It’s essentially like planning a trip to Hawaii without booking your travel plans or packing your suitcase until the day you leave. Things get expensive and chaotic real quick! What do you want to accomplish? What do you want to experience in the room you are decorating? What can you keep, what do you want to buy?

    2) Budget

Everyone HATES this question, but it is a part of the process. Do you decide to purchase a car and go straight to the Porsche dealership? I’m gonna guess no. Everything has an average cost. These numbers don’t come out of thin air and are not easily manipulated. A sofa costs, what a sofa costs. And yes, just like cars there are different levels of economy and luxury, which do you want, and which can you afford?

    3) Timing

    Timing

This is a huge rookie mistake that I see a lot. Homeowners will live with the same room for ten years and then suddenly want it completely redesigned in a week because of a huge event. Even worse, they won’t consult with a professional and they end up buying in a sense of spastic urgency only to hate everything they purchased 6 months later…..ultimately wasting a lot of money. Yes design can be done quickly but only if you have a plan and a solid budget.

SO what can you walk away with? Decide what it is you want to do, how much you are willing to invest to get it, and give yourself enough time to attain the room you’ve been planning to avoid rookie mistakes. Seems simple, but sometimes we say things like “if it were a snake it would have bit me” for a reason!

    Stunning Exterior Paint Combinations

One of my favorite obsessions is driving through different neighborhoods to see exterior paint combinations. I love to see how others express themselves through their homes, and color is a great way to do that! And often homeowners like to play it safe, so it says a lot about a homeowner who takes risks. Here are a few of my favorites:

    Exterior paint colors

Love this combo of various grey’s. The front door is also stunning!

    Exterior paint colors

This combo is moody, masculine and very contemporary. A great combo for a classic ranch style home.

    Exterior paint colors

Excellent example of taking a split level home from the 70′s and updating it with current colors and stone. Smart combo and savvy style.

    Exterior paint colors

Love this stunning Navy. I would have combined this with a yellow or orange front door. But kudos to the homeowners for taking a risk and going with such a strong color.

    Exterior paint colors

What a terrific combo. Navy, red and green with white trim. Fun and exciting, says a lot about these homeowners. Also love the architecture as well!

What are some of your favorite combos?

Cash confessions-Quick tips to perk up your budget

It’s no secret we all wish we could stretch our dollars further in order to complete our project the way we want. As a professional I will often recommend to clients that they save their dollars to get exactly what they want, rather then sacrificing, but as a rule of thumb always keep these four things in mind:

    1) If you’re not sure what your project is going to cost, hire a professional like myself to come out to give you an idea.

    Kitchen in need of remodel

I was recently hired to help a gal do this very thing. She is about to move here from Dallas and loves a home located in Brentwood, TN. Great location, good size and close to work. The problem? The entire house has medallions on every cabinet (shown above). They are in the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry room…you name it they are on every surface. Unfortunately this application has ruined all of the cabinets, thus explaining why this house has been on the market sine 2010. Before even doing minor decorating this home will have a minimum of $75K in renovations. Had she not hired me she would have had to live with the existing cabinets, or fallen into a money pit.

    2) Prioritize-Create a list of the essentials

    Home Exterior update

If your house needs a new roof, a front door and a new garage, figure out what NEEDS to be done first and budget accordingly. If you only received $4K back on your tax return and the new roof is going to be $5800, you need to decide if you want to set that $4K aside in savings or move forward on the garage door. I see many people fall into the pitfall of wanting to do it all at once, and putting home improvements on your credit card is never wise. Plan, plan, plan.

    3) Avoid DIY if you don’t have experience.

    DIY projects

There is a huge DIY movement sweeping the nation thanks to reality TV shows and DIY classes at big box stores. Many homeowners fall into the trap of thinking they will save money if they “do-it-themselves” and avoid hiring a contractor. Homeowners that go it alone without proper training and experience learn real fast that mistakes are extremely costly. Especially if you end up having to hire a contractor and the materials you purchased have to be repurchased again. Not to mention the lost time!

    4) Choose projects that will yield the biggest return.

    Kitchen update

In our industry we call this the ‘cost vs value’ on return. Does your project retain resale, and will another potential buyer think so? If money is driving your decisions on your home improvement projects, all of the above factors must be taken into consideration, but none are more important than the ROI. If you are really scrimping pennies you need to choose projects that give you the biggest bang for your buck.

The Kitchen project shown above is a great example. By simply repainting this kitchen a complimentary color to the kitchen cabinets her small investment of $1500 turned into a $20K ROI when she put her house on the market. Why? Because the potential new homeowners saw the value in a beautiful large kitchen that works well for their kids and family….not the cabinets with a strong yellow undertone. By hiring me to help her select the RIGHT paint color, her small investment turned into big reward.

    Classy Can Be Colorful

    Grant K Gibson Designs

As I was perusing through pinterest this past weekend I came across this delightful portfolio pic from Grant Gibson. His work is a fine example of tasteful design without fear of using color. This kitchen of classic lines and everyday sophistication mixed with whimsy clearly shows the two can co-exisit in beautiful harmony. What do you think?

Are You Doing It? Avoid These 3 Design Mistakes

When it comes to design I often say there are no rules,…. but…… and this is a big BUT…. I say this with an err of caution. There are no rules when certain things are taken into consideration like scale, depth and harmony. A trained eye can easily throw items together that seemingly don’t work at all but marry and mingle quite well like a fun party. Luckily, I see the same mistakes over and over and I am here to the rescue!

    1) Floor lamps- Dont skimp on floor lamps!

    Floor lamps

I see this over and over again. Most of my clients decide they want to purchase a floor lamp and make decisions solely on price, not product. Why? Floor lamps are damn expensive! And often you don’t know that you are not comparing apples to apples. The lamps above are a great example, the one on the left is from Target. A steal at only $69.99 especially when the Restoration Hardware lamp on the right is a whopping $400. But my friends you get what you pay for. The Target lamp is a whisp of a creature made of plastic, wiring is questionable and it barely makes the height requirements for a disneyland ride. At only 59″ tall this little guy will barely make a difference in lighting your room. Instead, opt for the investment piece that is better made, won’t eat through bulbs and at 72″, you’ll actually be able to read your book and avoid stubbing a toe.

    2) Pillows-avoid poly fills at all costs

    Pillows

Unless you are allergic to down, never ever buy poly filled pillows. Yes they are less expensive but the materials break down giving you lumpy pillows that cannot be fixed. They are hard to sit on and frankly uncomfortable. Down filled pillows are pliable and easy to form on all your upholstery, they are comfy to sit on and just look better.

    3) Rugs-size accordingly

How to size a rug properly

This is another mistake I see over and over.  The photo above is a great example of what the homeowner has, and the tape shows what she should have. Rugs create congruency with all the pieces in the room. When the rug is under scaled the furniture doesn’t make sense. See how her chair in the upper right corner is just floating in the room? It’s like a junior high dance where all the girls are on one side of the room and the boys on the other side. We want our furniture pieces mingling and having fun. Now imagine if the rug went all the way to the chair like the tape. The room would instantly feel more comfortable, it would feel larger and all the pieces wouldn’t be angry for being left out. Size accordingly.

Make sense? If you have questions or comments, email me, I’d love to hear from you!

Easy Makeover Ideas In 10 Minutes Or Less

Ever wonder if there was an ‘easy’ button for your next decorating project? Maybe you have family coming for the weekend or you’re planning to have friends over for dinner but you hesitate because your living room just isn’t up to par. Doing a quick change doesn’t need to take a lot of time or money, just simple planning. Heres how to get a quick change in 10 minutes or less.

    Lamp art by John Richards

Take a picture of your room. I suggest using your phone, it’s quick and easy. Taking a picture is the best way to really see how it looks and where it needs a facelift. Luckily there are a few tried and true elements sure to update your space in a flash.

    1) Lighting-add a new floor lamp or table lamp. This can be something new or a lamp pulled from another room

    2) Pillows-Most furniture comes with pillows or you already have some to work with. Move them around, pull from other rooms or add to your existing collection. this is a great way to add something new, a pop of color and more comfort.

    Candles

    3) Most of us have candles around the house. Candles are a great addition to any room because they uplift and embrace it with ambience. They are great mood enhancers especially in scents of lavender, vanilla or rose.

    4) Throws-Adding a throw to your sofa or chair is a great way to add depth, color and most importantly comfort. When a guest sees a throw they subconsciously think comfort and relaxation, they also feel well taken care of.

    5) Decorative tray- Trays are great for a room especially when you are entertaining. It keeps your party offerings all together and easy to move around. It can also collect any small spills from pouring tea or scooping sugar.

    Furnished living room

Adding color, texture and lighting to a space will greatly enhance the mood. Add just a few elements and your room will be ready in a flash!

My Thoughts On Blackberry’s New Z10 For Verizon

    Blackberry Z10 by Verizon Wireless

I have now had my Verizon Blackerry Z10 cell phone for about two weeks. It is by far the best phone that I have had on the ambassador program and I like it’s functionality. I am new to the blackberry family so I am unable to compare it to past models as I know many of you were addicted to the original models. It is easy to navigate, intuitive and one of my favorite features is the keyboard, which I have heard was one of it’s original favorites from users. For me, it is easy to type on quickly and responds well.

    Verizon Wireless Blackberry Z10 phone

The phone is a good size and has a screen size comparative to Apples iPhone 5. Another feature that I like is the Z10′s home screen. It has the top four things happening on your phone, giving you a snapshot of the “now”, and then swipes to the left for easy access to all the apps and features like twitter.

General use of the phone such as voicemail, texting and surfing the web has proven to be easy to do as well. I am still experimenting with the apps and music and I recently downloaded Apollo, which is a third party app for pandora (but it has been buggy.)

I have used the maps/navigation a few times but still learning the features. The camera has a lot of great features that haven’t been properly used by me, other than silly instagram uploads.  I suppose the cool camera is totally wasted on me.

So far I would give the phone an 8 out 10 rating. I give it an eight because of one feature I hate- it does not have a home button. In order to get out of an app or feature you have to wipe the screen from the lower left corner to the upper right corner. I find this to be annoying and I often hit a URL, or the like when I am in twitter or facebook or online and end up on another page I did not want to be on……still trying to finesse this!

Sexy Outdoor Rugs To Transform Your Patio

    Modern rugs BA04

It’s hard to believe, but summer is just around the corner, so that means it is time to start cleaning up the patio and hosing off the deck. A great way to freshen up your outdoor space is with an amazing outdoor rug. With so many great options on the market, your outdoor space can be refreshed in just a matter of minutes, with just the right rug. Here are some of my favorites:

    Modern rugs

Rugs add  great depth and color to your outdoor space and add much needed color sex appeal…which I love! They are also easy to use as your main palette to create a fun new look. Take for example the rug shown above. Using this as my starting point I created this new look for my patio:

    My new patio

All I did was start with the rug. Where last years patio had more aqua, this years arrangement holds more orange, black and gold. And I cannot wait to get my new drapes! What do you think? Instant sexy for 2013, and all it took was a rug. Start with a new outdoor rug for your space and you’ll completely transform it into something fabulous! Not sure where to start? Drapes Without Windows, Yes It Can Be Done

Let’s face it, windows without draperies just look naked. I remember when I was in my twenties living in a house with over 30 windows with no drapes. It was awful. While the house looked unfinished and naked, I refused to have bad drapes for the sake of having them. Now I make sure to buy houses with less windows and always budget for drapery….they are the ball gown or sundress for your windows, and transform a room as much as a fresh coat of paint.

Drapery done correctly can soften a room, help absorb sound and add depth. But have you ever considered drapery on a door way? Using design elements out of context is a great way to add that element of surprise; like using drapery in entrances, hallways and doorways. This space shown below, (photos courtesy of StyleBlueprint yesterday), feature the Phelan house with just that element of surprise. As an added bonus these drapes draw the eye up, and frame a beautiful bull sculpture with horns. A stunning example of draperies used out of context and done very well!

The neutral palette is easy on the eyes and with so many wonderful architectural details the space is hardly boring. What is your favorite part of this room?

Fun, Flirty Rooms-What To Buy Now!

    Colorful bedroom

Design has taken a hard swing to the left in the last five years. What once was dark red, golden yellow and deep brown has now turned to flirty pink, soft griege and playful aqua. The mediterranean look swiftly took a leap to the back burner and 1950′s aqua and pink have become the new red and brown. To update your space in a flash you’ll need to buy a few new things.

    Floral + Wallpaper

Wallpaper-Whether you do one wall or a whole bathroom, wallpaper is one of the coolest and fastest trending design items on the market. And not that cheesy vinyl stuff your grandma had, you know the stuff that took dynamite to remove and it smelled like plastic. I’m talking good stuff like Schumacher, or Graham and Brown. Truly the quickest way to add instant chic to your home.

    Striped hostess chairs

Fully upholstered hostess chairs- With bold patterns and fun details over sized hostess chairs add great style and depth to any dining room, not to mention over-the-top comfort!

    Patterned drapes

Drapery- The hottest trend now is to go bold, or as I like to say, GO BIG, OR GO HOME! Whether you go with big, bold, patterned drapes or a terrific bold color don’t ever skimp on dressing your windows. It’s the equivalent of wearing a Chanel dress and forgetting your shoes…it just looks off.

    Outdoor Living

Outdoor living-Bringing the indoors out has been a trend for quite some time, however, never have spaces been so colorfully designed and fun. Traditionally outdoor spaces were treated more formally. Todays patios and outdoor spaces have cleaner lines, better fabrics to choose from and much more color, so dive in and have some fun!

Which one is your favorite trend? I’m a designer I simply cannot choose!

    When Fashion Meets Design

    Case Mate

I have been looking for a new iPhone case for months. I wanted something that was stylish, but not over the top. And it didn’t hurt to be “designer-y” but I didn’t want a brand splashed all over it…sounds complicated, right? Well I am nothing if not sure of what I want. So I was so excited to find case mate.

    Case Mate

Classy, stylish and not all up in your face like some name brands. And the best part? Not just of iPhone, they offer many cases for all the top brand phones,

    Case mate

I love it when things are easy. I especially love having options. Now I just have to choose which one I want. Bah! Decisions, decisions!

Viridian, Robert Allen’s New Digital Fabric Book

It has been so interesting to watch my very non technical industry go digital in the past five years. Just in the last three years the Interior Design industry has catapulted into the digital age at lighting speed, and if our manufacturers and trades don’t keep up, well they are in the dark. Now with the simple flip of my iPad you, my clients, can flip through thousands of fabric options with the touch of a finger. Simply type in Pink (my favorite of all colors) and voila; options in the world of pinks!

    Robert Allen Fabrics

Perhaps color isn’t your thing and you need a specific pattern like stripes….no problem!

    Robert Allen Fabrics

Now our fabric libraries have gone digital! While this isn’t a tactile experience as most of us prefer, it allows us a quick easy tool to search exactly what we need without the added cost and waste of thousands of fabric books. Viridian, as the app is called allows us to shop all fabric books with ease on any computer, tablet or smart phone. And if we find anything we like for the project I can simply call them up and order a swatch. Easy Peesy, love that!!

What do you think of this new app? Like it, love it, or Meh, it’s not preferable?

    The Windows HTC 8x review

For the last six months I have been fortunate enough to be an ambassador for several Verizon Wireless products. This exploration has allowed me to venture out of my comfort zone and into the world of otherwise unknown smart phones. While I must admit that Apple has always been king of my heart, their recent  screw up with their maps program kinda left a permanent “suck-it face” on my expression because I use and need maps every single day for work.

The first phone I received I really struggled with. More than likely that was my own technological hurdles getting in the way and me trying to overcome iPhone lust, which initially ws worse than my first high school crush! Now that I am a seasoned ambassador and have technology well under my belt (literally with my way cool fitbit!) I have learned to be slightly more comfortable with learning new things. So when my new HTC 8X phone arrived a few months ago I was eager to really get the hang of it  quickly. Surprisingly, it was as intuitive if not more than the after-mentioned and very user friendly. I was so damn happy! And switching won’t be nearly as difficult as you think!

    My top fun features:

    1) People app-I find this to be an app that is superior to apples. With FB, Linked in or twitter you can easily upload all of your friends details in a snap with their pics, social media info and more

    2) Live tile home screen-Yes it is as cool as it sounds. It literally showcases with pics a snapshot of everything that is going on with your apps on your home screen. Tweets appear, pics on Facebook and current headlines.

    3) Ease of use-I said this before, it is easy to navigate and use. I am not a huge tech person so I will always have learning curves. Now I am definitely better than grandma at learning new phones, but if it takes me five minutes to figure something out I get frustrated. This phone is intuitive. Its ease of use and home screen tiles make it easy for me to find what I need quickly; and the best part is, the maps work!

How to add a little color to your life

    Better Homes and Gardens

There is nothing I love more than color in an interior. Color speaks to all of us in different ways, but it never fails to make us feel happy! How can you look at this space and not smile? Some of the easiest ways to add color to your life:

    1) Pillows-Super easy to change out and add to any space.

    2) Art-Whether you like custom high-end art or inexpensive pieces from the flea market the effect is all the same. Use it to add that pop!

    3) Accessories-Sprinkle them around the house in fun unexpected colors. Even if you think they don’t go with the color scheme, use it anyways. It’s always nice to have that added surprise!

    LED and Education

    Hit lights

“The Designers Lighting Forum of New York has announced its highest advance registration numbers to LEDucation 7. Held in New York City on March 20, 2013, the event draws designers and lighting professionals for educational sessions and a product expo dedicated to the LED market.” quoted by KB+B.

This is exciting news! Lighting has always been a passion of mine since college. One of my instructors instilled the importance and correlation of good lighting with good design. As she would say “If a space is lit well, the Architecture and furnishings will sing!” And I agree with her. Unfortunately, good lighting has always been done with halogen lights. They offer the whitest of light, showing off interiors in their purest form. While they make the interior look beautiful they are harsh on our environment. And frankly,  fluorescent lighting is not the “green” answer-no one needs that in their environment, they’re ugly!  LED is the answer! They use less energy, produce little to no heat and are the closest to white light that you can achieve! Here is a great post on lighting basics!

    3 Foods To Better Skin

When it comes to our skin we rarely think about the effects of what we eat as the culprit to dry dull skin.We assume that some topical product can be whisked across our faces and like a magical day at Disney we will immediately start glowing. While some topical products do in fact ASSIST in that overall glow, (going to Disney doesn’t hurt either) the food we ingest plays a bigger role: What you place on the inside affects the skin on the outside. Here are three game changers:

    1) Avocados

Seriously do you need an excuse to eat this yummy fruit? These suckers are abundant in B-complex vitamins like Niacin (B3) which is an anti-inflammatory that soothes our skin and eliminates dry skin.

    2) Almonds

Yum, another fav of mine. Almonds are chocked full of vitamin E which is great for your overall complexion. They help moisturize dry skin and all of it’s antioxidants protect against premature aging and skin damage.

    3) Cottage Cheese

Now I know all the cool kids are deleting dairy from their diets, but if they jump off a bridge are you gonna follow too? Cottage cheese is not only a healthy food but full of an essential mineral called selenium. Mix this with tons of vitamin E and you have a very powerful free radical/antioxidant duo that is ready to kick some serious anti aging ass.

5 Great Uses For Lemons Around The House

    Lemons

Lemons are more than a delectable citrus garnish or cooking staple. This little yellow god has hundreds of very practical uses around the house from deodorizing your house to cleaning stainless steel. Not only are they practical but they have no harsh chemicals and will cut back on your overall cleaning expenses!

    1) Deodorize your home

From your refrigerator, sock drawer or the litter box, this citrus king eliminates harsh odors throughout the house. My best tips?

~Soak a sponge in lemon and place in your fridge

~Use lemon peels for around the litter box or sock drawer

~Simmer lemon and peels on the stovetop for an overall fresh scent

    2) Eliminate tarnish and grime

Brass, copper and stainless steel can easily get grimey and unsightly. Remove tarnish and build up with a wedge of lemon. The citric acid will leave your bling shining bright. If your pieces need additional scrubbing add a little baking soda for a little extra grit

    3) Stain removal

Ever host a party only to have someone spill a glass of wine on your carpet? No time to fret. Blot up the excess and saturate with lemon juice. Top off with some good ol’ table salt Once the stain has wicked it’s way into the salt simple vacuum up.

    Cleaning with Lemons

    4) Dish detergent

Lemons are extremely effective on grease. Squeeze juice onto hard baked-on foods and tough messes. Let soak and sprinkle on a little baking soda. Voila with a little elbow grease your dishes are as good as new.

    5) Insect pesticide

Ants, fleas and cockroaches do not like the strong scent of lemons. Place the peels and juices onto window sills and around the kitchen to deter these pesky intruders.

    BONUS!

an additional use for lemons that I love is the preservation of food! Have a left over tomato, avocado etc., etc place in a container with a lemon wedge. Your left overs will last twice as long and won’t brown!

What are some of your favorite uses for lemons?

3 Secrets to a better nights sleep

How many sleepless nights does it take to make you realize that there may be things you should be doing to get a better nights sleep? I have so many clients who average 5 or less hours of sleep a night. 5? How on earth can you operate on such little sleep? How can you make big decisions and have great insight on such little sleep? My greatest creativity peaks right after a nap…..on a day when I had plenty of sleep the night before. Honestly. Too many people feel guilty for taking too much time for themselves. As if taking a nap is too decadent for their over busy lives. One of my favorite saying is ” stop glamorizing busy”. And it is true. Why do Americans feel unproductive if they are not busy? The bigger question…busy doing what? Early in my career I felt guilty if I wasn’t on the go from the moment I got up. Literally passing out from exhaustion by 10pm because I had ran myself silly. Is this productive? No, my friends it is not. Be decadent, over indulge and treat your body right. Get plenty of rest, don’t over do it or over schedule. If you don’t get it done, well you don’t get it done. Plain and simple. Here are my best tips for a better nights sleep:

Wind down at the same time

    1) Start winding down at a certain time every single night. This may seem obvious but no one does it…except me! At 9pm every night I shut down all electronics, including the TV, and go through a usual routine of turning lights down, taking a warm shower and grabbing a good book. I’ve even started making it a mantra to learn one new thing a week. A great challenge for my mind to think on while I sleep!

    2) Linens. Always, always buy the best linens you can afford. It makes all the difference in the world to sleep on good cotton linens. Not polyester. And it isn’t necessary to buy the highest thread count. They can actually make you hotter! Just buy good quality 300-400 TC sheets that feel great and help you sleep better.

    Choose good linens

    3) Indulge in the little things because they make a BIG difference. Candles in the evening create a wonderful ambience and help slow things down. Fresh flowers are always a lovely touch, fresh scents of chamomile or lavender on the sheets and plenty of good reading. Create a ritual that you do every night. This helps your body wind down and prepare for sleep. It also helps slow your brain activity.

As an added bonus always leave a note pad by your bed. I’ve heard many gurus, and coaches over the years state the importance of writing things down the night before. This gets things out of your head and onto paper without worry.

What are some of your favorite rituals before bed?

    A moment in scale

If you read my post from last week, When good design goes bad, you’ll notice that I have a pet peeve for scale. It is a designers strongest arsenal but it is often the one thing that falls flat in most designs. Get it right and the room sings, get it wrong and it turns into American Idol…the bad version.

Today as I perused a few websites I came across a great example of a room that sings and one that…..well didn’t make the cut of yours truly. Here is my quick moment in scale:

    1) Poor scale

    One kind design

Observe the over scaled chair, mirror and chest. All perfectly good in such a large scaled room…..until you place it with buffet lamps. Yes they are tall and the color shades thankfully pull a bit of weight but not enough to make the scale RIGHT.

    2) Excellent scale

    Suzanne McGrath

Tall ceilings combined with a large chest and mirror seem second fiddle to the well proportioned lamps. Bold in color, tall and speak volumes (pun intended) compared to the previous example. A much better choice when getting RIGHT! Wouldn’t you agree? Can you see the difference??

What are some of your biggest challenges when handling scale?

I’ve been working out my entire adult life. Gym equipment can sometimes be intimidating and confusing to use, especially when you are at the gym with professionals who look like they never leave the building. This app shows various equipment and gives you fat cutting, muscle building tips while allowing you to track your own progress. Win-win!

    3) Fit bit

I’ve only been using this app for the past month. The best feature of this app is the sleep tracking activity and it shows more detailed activity than my fitness pal. I have found that the two togehter compliment each other well and really help keep me on track.

    4) Run Keeper

This is a great app for runners. It helps you not only track your activities but it measures calories and overall distance traveled over time. The interface is easy to use like the other apps but is specifically geared towards the runner. It helps you analyze and monitor your activities in an easy to use platform. Great in combination with the other apps.

    When good design goes bad

Now I often say on this blog that rules are made to be broken. However, let me clarify on that very topic. Rules are made to be broken within reason.

    Bad design

Now mixing up chairs is always a good idea….mixing the wrong chairs, well that is a bad idea. There are so many things wrong with this design. The hostess chairs are way to big for this space. In other words scale is all wrong. The side chairs are way to small….making your guests feel inferior to those who sit at the ends. And the style, let’s just say it is good to mix them but this is way off. In my opinion, the one that counts, this room needs help. If this is your room give me a call, I can give you the 411 on how to decorate this space properly and not make your guests feel like midgets.

    Good design

Instead choose a scale that is appropriate to your room, and in context with the other furniture pieces, like above. It is good to mix and match, however, not to the point of falling into wonderland….even Alice herself would feel out of place in the first dining room!

Chartreuse, and a little blue equals love

Chartreuse is such a lovely color. It can easily be paired with Navy, fuchsia, gray, or even orange and look fresh. It is also one of those unexpected colors…you know what I am talking about…the one you see in the store and think you could never pull it off. But when you take the risk it’s likely to be the most favored piece in the house.

    Shower Niches

    Shower niches

I have done many, many shower remodels over the years and one of the best installments any bathroom addition can have are shower niches. They are easily built into the 2×4′s and can be as tall as you like. It creates a wonderful storage solution for all your shower accessories and keeps them neat and tidy. Having shampoo bottles and soap all over the shower floor and shower seat just looks messy!

While this ledge (shown above) does provide some storage it limits you on overall storage space and can use up valuable shower space; not to mention looks messy. If the option is available always install cubbies to maximize on your shower solutions.

Another recommendation is to add a small shaving niche. If your shower is small and does not have a seat it can prove to be difficult to shave if you are a woman. Add a small cubby for your foot to make shaving comfortable and easy!

What are some of your favorite shower features?

3 ways to maximize your garage space

    Tools for a Harder-Working Garage

While Webster defines the garage as “a shelter for automotive vehicles,” most of us use our garages for much more than that. Dad stores his tools, tires, and to-dos; mom pulls in with the minivan and piles up potential craft projects; and the kids create chaos with endless amounts of sports equipment and toys. In the end, we often don’t even have room for the cars.

Short of shuffling all your gear to the trash, how can a garage fulfill its storage responsibilities when so many users are demanding space? Well, with a handful of creative solutions and clever organizational strategies, you can transform your space into a multipurpose marvel that holds a three-car garage’s worth of stuff in a two-car garage’s amount of space, no garage sale needed.

Use Your Walls to Double Your Space

Clearing clutter from the floor is the first step to getting the garage in working order, and that means utilizing every inch of the walls and ceiling. Here are a few tricks for getting the most out of your available space:

    • For items that don’t get accessed often (such as holiday decorations and luggage), either install a cable-lifted storage rack or create a sliding storage system for rimmed plastic bins along the ceiling. This makes use of previously dead space and gets larger containers off the ground. Pulley systems for raising bikes are also available.
    • Install a two-foot-deep shelf around the upper perimeter of the garage to provide additional storage space for bulk paper items and dry goods, small plastic bins, paint supplies, etc. With the typical two-car garage boasting three 24-foot long walls, mounting shelves like these roughly gains an extra 150 feet of usable space.
    • Pegboards have long been a go-to for garage gurus, but have you ever thought about them three-dimensionally? By hanging several separate framed pegboards perpendicular to the wall on vertical hinges (sort of like leaves in a book), you gain plenty of surface area for hanging tools without taking up much wall space. Plus, the divided pegboards make categorizing items a breeze. Consider painting outlines of the tools in their appropriate spot on the pegboard so everyone knows what goes where.
    • If your garage walls are unfinished, screw small hooks on the ends of neighboring studs, then stretch a few short bungee cords between them to create a makeshift crate for tall garden tools, sports equipment, or balls.

Give Storage Spaces a Dual Purpose

Once you’ve established a place for all of your items, find ways that you can make your garage goods do double duty. With many users vying for usable space, your storage solutions have to do more than just contain things in order to hold their own:

    • Whether you have repurposed kitchen cabinets, plastic bins, or a large metal storage locker, paint the outer doors or lids with a coat of inexpensive chalkboard paint then affix a cup nearby to hold chalk. Kids will love being able to “color” on the garage furniture, Type-A moms can quickly scrawl labels describing what’s inside, and your resident handyman will appreciate being able to jot down measurements for whatever project’s in progress.
    • Enrich your shelf’s life by utilizing the space underneath as much as you do that on top. Screw small hooks to the underside of a shelf to hold hanging tools and toys, or glue the lids to several jars to the bottom surface and twist the containers into them for stowing small items like nuts and bolts, sidewalk chalk, and nails.
    • Save yourself some drawer space and add magnetic strips along the back of your cabinet doors to hold lightweight metal tools and paintbrushes in easy reach.

    Give Yourself Room to Grow

On a clear day, punching the garage door opener quickly doubles or even triples your workspace, depending on the size of your driveway, so make expanding to the outside simple and easy:

      DSCN8920

    • Include one or two mobile workbenches (essentially carts on casters) that can be rolled out into the driveway when needed. Whether you create your own or purchase one ready-made, you can also set larger tools like chop saws and drill presses onto wheeled stands.
    • With little more than a piece of plywood and a couple of hinges, you can build a flip-down workspace that folds out of the way when not in use. Such a desk is ideal for walkways that must be kept clear when you’re not working.

What other ways have you found to stretch the boundaries of your garage as a multi-purpose room?

The New Windows 8x Phone by Verizon

I’m thrilled to have been chosen again to be a Verizon Ambassador for their new Windows 8x phone by HTC. My role over the next few months is to test this phone and give y’all my honest opinion on how it works, and how user friendly it is. So far so good. Now we did have a fabulous webinar explaining the different applications and functions of our new phones, but I have to say this is the first time I have been excited about a phone since the launch of iPhone.

One of my favorite features so far are the tiles on the home screen. They are easy to customize and they include everything from fun to use aps, to Facebook to the latest and breaking news. I also love the fact that the tiles themselves can be customized. They can be as big or small as I want and I can place them anywhere I choose on the home screen. The best part? I was able to do this without instruction. A phone that is this user friendly and easy to use…one that is what I consider intuitive, is a phone that I can recommend.

Now I am off to use the camera…and BTW, it has photo features to customize my pics and it has different lenses! OMG, I am in heaven!

**As part of the Verizon Wireless Ambassador program, I received a free device and service in exchange for my honest opinions. Thoughts and opinions here are 100% my own. **

How to choose exterior colors for your home

Choosing an exterior color palette for your home can be tricky because many factors need to be taken into consideration. Mistakes can be made easily and if you overlook three key things you’re sure to fail before you even get started.

In the past few months I’ve been working with a local contractor on his new spec house. (I also helped him with the exterior of his farmhouse.) The colors of this spec house were extremely important to me for three reasons. I wanted something different, I wanted to honor the houses architecture and I also wanted to respect the subdivision. This french inspired home felt fresh, modern and I wanted the exterior to feel the same. When Choosing colors there are 3 things to consider:

    1) What is the theme in the neighborhood you live in?

    2) What is the style of your home?

    3) Where is the homes location? For example, are you in the Arizona desert or Mountains of Vermont?

Choose your main exterior color first. This is the start of your palette.

Choose accent colors for drains and trims, and decide on a stain or paint color for your doors

For me I wanted classic with a spin. Drains and trims were done in a charcoal brown and shutters in a deep forest green. Fresh, different and Awesome!

If uncertain of your color choices paint your blueprints. It’s a great way to get an overall feel of what your color palette will look like.

How not to light a bathroom

This past weekend I was in a Marriot in Florida and was disappointed to find such poor lighting in their main bathroom off the lobby. Now to the naked eye most would not see the issue, right?

    Poor lighting example

It’s like a finding waldo example only this game might end badly when you go to apply your lipstick. Here’s the issue: The can lights are about 3″ past the the vanity. This effect highlights the vanity beautifully, but without additional lighting around the mirror the woman looking to fix her make-up, fluff her hair or pull that object out of her eye is going to be completely in the dark. As soon as I leaned in over the 24″ vanity to fix my lip gloss I might as well have been putting it up my nose because I couldn’t see anything. And when I stepped back to grab some light…..well I was so far away from the mirror I couldn’t tell my nose from my ears.

Design tip: Always layer your lighting especially in a bathroom. Put everything on dimmers and make sure there is plenty of light no matter where you stand. Have questions or comments? Email me at info@abhomeinteriors.com

    How to style your bookshelves

About a year ago I wrote an article on The Secret To Perfectly Organized Bookshelves. Bookshelves may seem like a utilitarian place to store books and odd ball items for display but they really are not for the faint at heart. Our homes have beautiful architectural details that if styled right can instantly give your room a face lift, and showcase your most prized objects with style. Today I helped a client style her book shelf for with items she already had and  the results were stunning.

    Before

    After

Don’t be afraid to edit. Many of my clients over decorate their shelves and want to show off everything. Instead, rotate your collections and books for a more organized look. Use like minded items, like pottery, colors, finishes or objects that display well and are easy on the eyes. Always leave room to add new books or found items and remember to have fun with it! And if you’re not entirely sure what to do, give me a call! I am happy to help. My team and I can come out ourselves, or I can do a virtual appointment with you to get you on your way.

When I suggest to clients, that I’d like to use a quilt on their bed, I see shifty, questionable behavior with a lift of one eyebrow. “Um, I’m not sure we are quilt people, nor do I think you heard me correctly when we said we are not traditionalists.” I suppose it is wicked of me to see their discomfort but do know that I will not lead you astray. On the contrary, as a designer it is my job to not only mix it up but give the room new life with texture, color and a vitality is has never seen!

    Wild-wood tumbler Handmade quilt

This quilt by IMKquilts,(shown above) is by an artisan quilter out of Owatonna MN. I find this piece colorful, fun, something I could use many times over in my own interiors. Quilts do not have to be stuffy, or doddery but many people hear the word quilt and suddenly get slippery with the idea that their room is about to become their grandmothers!

    Sherbet Quilt

This quilt by Bungalow quilts, out of Cincinnati is another great example of a beautiful and colorful quilt that I would spec for a bedroom. Quilts are an excellent way to add character to a room but more importently it is also a way to support handmade skill that is threatened by inexpensive knock-offs that are mass produced and sold for pennies on the dollar. These one-of-a-kind quilts add personality and charm that no one else has. And each handmade quilt is made with a level of pride and love that is unique to each handstitched piece made.

Here are some examples of quilts done right, and these are not your grandmas room!

Scale and proportion-How to choose the right lamps

I am a huge stickler for using the right scale when decorating a room. I go on and on about how the best thing to do when designing a room is to Go Big or Go Home. Never ever err to the smaller side of things no matter what size your room is. Whether large or small, your room that is, a large scale lamp is always the way to go. Why? Well lamps provide decoration and they also provide light. That’s kinda their main purpose right? So why on earth would you choose a lamp that is so low that the cat couldn’t read underneath it? I cannot stand little lamps and heres why:

    1)

Example number one. This room, shown above, is stunning. Great wallpaper (which makes the room I might add), great furniture that is scaled properly to the room and then theres the lamp…..Um, Houston we have a problem. Poorly scaled to this room. Too small and looks like it belongs on a buffet. Not to mention gets totally lost with such a large scaled paper behind it. Instead opt for something like this:

    dwell bedding, peacock wallpaper

Large paper, large solid lamps that stand on their own and don’t get lost with the paper. lways go bigger and especially solid. Little stick lamps belong on buffets and small areas where they are proportionate to their surroundings. Your lamps should be tall and have some oomph to them. Otherwise they completely make the room feel off and it is such a simple fix. Change the lamps and you’ll change your life!

    18 steps to Design Success

Five years into my design career it occurred to me that few people really understood what it was I did. Now I know the term ‘interior designer’ gets thrown around more than a Las Vegas call girl, thanks to shows like HGTV, and of course every furniture store in town now offers them up as a free gift with purchase. Don’t get me wrong, I can hustle harder than any member of the oldest profession on the planet, but I prefer to do it standing up; if you know what I mean. So what do you do when the hustle has no flow, and every consultation you have is more a cross examination/ interrogation to no where for both parties? Create a checklist, do your homework, get inspired and look at the options in your area.

I also realized that the reason no one knew what an interior designer is, was the term had few perimeters and everyone on the planet was suddenly deemed an interior designer as long as they got a business card that says so. With little credentials, and no experience, anyone could head to vista print and have themselves a snazzy new business card, *and like magic*, a spiffy new title. SO, with so many grey areas, how do you hire a creative professional that meets your needs, listens to your wants, and comes in on budget?

Interview at least three people. You don’t always need the most experienced, most expensive option, but you do need a person that fits you and your lifestyle. The designer’s you meet may have {it}, or they may not. I tell my clients all the time, I may not be the cheapest option, but I guarantee I am the BEST! How do I know this? …because my business card says so!  No, I know I am the best because I am good at my job, and I have 12 years of experience. I can anticipate everything, and expect anything. I always under promise and over deliver. But this comes with experience. Green peas fresh out of school may not be as expensive, but they will take longer, and often make costly mistakes if not guided with supervision. So how do you find the option that is right for you?

Once you have three people in mind, ask these questions:

1). How much experience do you have?
2). Is that experience in the field of interior design? (This one is important. Many times people will feel that because they are an artist, graphic designer, party planner, etc. they can whip out a room just the same)
3). What is your formal education?
    4) Where do I buy my products from? You, or through local stores?
    5) Do you have references?
    6) Are you insured? (this is another big one. Green Peas on their own often have NO insurance)
    7) Do you have trades that can help me with all areas of my project? If so, how long have you worked with them?
    8) Are your trades insured?
    9) Do you have a body of work I can see?
    10) How do you charge for your creativity?

Finding an interior designer that {fits} is like finding a pair of incredible shoes that look smart, and feel great. Once you have decided on a designer, these are 8 common questions your designer will ask you to get started, so be prepared to answer:

    1) How long do you plan on staying in your present home? (this is important because it will effect the budget)
    2) What type of lifestyle do you lead? ( entertain, late nights, church or book clubs, etc)
    3) Do you have children, starting a family or retired?
    4) What are your storage needs?
    5) What furniture do you currently own that you will be repurposing?
    6) Have you considered a color scheme, or have a direction in mind?
    7) Do you have a style, or know what your style is?
    8) How much do you want to spend? What is your budget?

With a designer in your back pocket they can help guide you through the abyss of the unknown and help you make knowledgeable decisions, and prevent costly mistakes. They can help you build an interior concept that can be knocked out all at once, or done in phases. But what if hiring a designer isn’t for you? How can you achieve design success on your own? Here are five things the DIY’er can do to help them acheive success on their own:

    1) Create a file, or binder with clippings, samples, color chips that organize the style and colors you are attracted to.
2 Draw a floor plan of the room or rooms you have in mind so that you have a list of things you need.
    3) Keep questions in your book of things you need or are unsure of, and develop an inventory list with dimensions to keep in your book.
    4) Based on your inventory sheet, develop a realistic budget to help you create a direction and plan.
    5) Create a schedule, based on the above four things, on what you will be doing when. This helps keep you focused, and on track

    Grilled Shrimp Panzanella with Basil

1 1/2 pounds peeled and deveined large shrimp

1 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest, plus 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

4 tablespoons olive oil, kosher salt and black pepper

1 small baguette (about 8 ounces) split lengthwise

2 1/2 pounds heirloom or beefsteak tomatoes, cut into wedges

    2 cups fresh basil leaves

Heat grill to medium high. In a large bowl, toss the shrimp with the lemon zest, 1 tablespoon of the oil ad 1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper. Brush the baguette with 1 tablespoon of the remaining oil.

Grill the baguette and shrimp, uncovered until is golden and crisp, about 1 minute per side and the shrimp are opaque through out, 2 to 3 minutes per side. Cut the baguette into bite sized pieces.

In a second large bowl, toss the shrimp, baguette, tomatoes and basil with the lemon juice, the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper.
