A How-To Guide to Formal Dining

Formal Dining spaces are slowly making their exit out of the home and turning into large eat-in kitchens where everyone can enjoy the space year round, in a casual setting. Many homes still have a room deemed ‘formal dining‘ by their home plans or lighting fixture, however some homeowners opt to use them for something else that gets used more often. It’s a shame really that we don’t utilize this space more because entertaining and enjoying a lovely meal is so much fun! If you still have a formal dining room and use it, here are some great tips to decorate your space.

Size does matter. Without the proper size table the room will not have the proper scale and harmony. Too big and the space will feel cramped and feel overwhelming…too small and you’ll lose seating and the room feels too large. SO choose accordingly.

Always dress up your table when dining in this room. This adds to the formality, beauty and luxury something we can all use more of in our lives! Mix it up and have fun with it.

Perfectly matched chairs that look like they came right out of the furniture store makes your dining room look staged. Mix and match your chairs to create a one-of-a-kind look. Take it further and customize them to the theme of the dinner to make the meal more fun.

Add personal touches. Candles, florals and custom linens make the event festive and memorable. Show your guests that they are special and that you have really thought of everything for their personal enjoyment. It is rare that we take time to enjoy a meal. Dining is more than just eating. It is about savoring the conversation, the people and the ambience of the occasion…. s’amuser!

  1. Kelly says:

The table looks great, Amanda! And I love those gorgeous chairs. Yum!

  2. Now this is interesting, because in Australia we are going back to including separate rooms for dining – as well as big eat in kitchens. The last couple of houses that I have designed have incorporated this. There is much to be said for the drama created from being in a separate room. Not so much “formal” as it is “fantasy” I think – a chance to add a little glamour and sense of occasion.

  3. Oh, I forgot to add how absolutely gorgeous your table setting looks. It is truly glamorous!
