Mrs M’s Family room has really exceeded my expectations. Last week I presented what most would consider the main wall in her apartment, however, I have saved the best for last! At my first consultation of Mrs M’s apartment the first thing I noticed when I walked in was the high ceiling. Although the apartment is small, the high ceilings give the illusion that the space is much larger than it really is. Unfortunately, Mrs M was not taking full advantage of this important real estate.
1) The Space

The space
Prime real estate and a few rookie mistakes make this current space fall flat. The chair is too big entering into this room and too much wall space going unnoticed.
2) The concept
The plan was to maximize on the ceiling height, move the elephant sized chair to the other side of the T.V and replace it with a new geometric patterned chair as seen from my last post:

3) The Installation
It took about three weeks to have the shelves made. I wanted them to be simple, undecorated floating shelves, in a medium fruitwood stain. Here, Ritchie and Jason start the installation.
Before placing the new chair in place the decoration is placed.
3) The results

Before and After
Adding the shelves draws the eye up and takes advantage of the high ceilings. The geometric chair helps ground the space and is more inviting than the large chair in it’s place.

Many of my readers live in temporary spaces and feel they are limited with what they can do. An apartment can sometimes feel restrictive, but all of these items are portable and can easily move to a new space. Even the shleves were built with the ability to cut them in half. Small changes make a big impact and Mrs M is thrilled with the results of her new space. Her apartment no longer feels temporary, and her guests are wowed with the unexpected decoration, something she absolutely loves.

What is your favorite thing about the space? For me, it’s a toss up. I love the lamps and the shelves, but I also have a thing for yellow!

It looks great! I can see why Mrs. M is thrilled – I would be too! The space feels more inviting and makes you want to sit back and relax.
I love it! I’ve done similar things with shelves a couple of times and it make a huge difference. The whole space turned out great.
