Many of the homes here in the south have traditional features. Most prominent of those features, the fireplace. Some of the most beautiful neighborhoods are those with older homes on tree lined streets…..and OLD fireplaces.
In the last six weeks, a client whom I have been working with for many years decided to update her outdated fireplace. I am pretty certain the angels were singing because it was music to my ears!
She wanted clean, easy and her biggest complaint, the room is just too dark! So I proposed that we reframe the fireplace, get rid of the brick and add iridescent glass to give the room some sparkle. My plan in true amanda fashion:
During our meeting this was my initial plan shown above. When ideas come I have to start drawing…even if this is the result! I then went back to the drawing board to create the builder scaled version:
Clean, bright drywall above, a beat up mantle and shiny glass below. The perfect fireplace. Today I went out to see our progress and I have to say I am quite pleased!

New fireplace
I am very pleased. We still have some lighting to install, and of course the room still needs its new paint but we are well on our way!

What a difference it’s made already, Amanda! I went up and down to the two last pictures a few times looking at the before and after so far. Love that tile! The mantel is so much better, too! I think that, visually, it doesn’t cut off the width like the previous one.
I’m doing good! Thanks for asking ~ getting out and about and doing way too much shopping. Just got a few more rooms to work on, but they are things that I can live with for the moment {like the guest bedroom}.
Pretty tile! Nicely done. Enjoy your weekend, AB.
We have the EXACT fireplace and LOVE your design. How is the mantel installed? Can’t figure out what is holding it up? also did you put the tile over the original brick or did you take off all the brick.
Awesome job!
